for a macbook what is the best recording software if the main reason was to record a band(mainly guitars)

I'm not a Mac person, but Finale Songwriter and Finale PrintMusic are really notation software, for writing Lead Sheets, Piano scores, band parts, etc.

For recording, you likely want something like pro-tools. Ntrack is good but that is PC based (www.ntrack.com)

The best recording software is made by Apple. All Macs come with Garageband, which is actually a pretty damn good piece of recording software. You can add all kinds of plug-ins, as well. I'm using Garageband with GuitarRig 2.

If you want to go semi-pro or pro, you can use Logic Express or Logic Studio. From what I know, those are the best of the best.

I haven't used the Finale software much, as I really don't read music. I've done some great recordings in Garageband though. Check out a YouTube video I made using Garageband:
