It could make your dog ill, depending on the amount eaten in relation to your dog's size and whether it is dark chocolate milk chocolate or white chocolate...But most likely with access to grass, it'll be sick and your panic will be over. Take your dog for a walk and let it have access to grass and you shouldn't need to visit your vet. If you are still concerned or if your dog seems very ill, give your vet a phone. They will know best if this is just someting that needs to work it's way through your dog's system or if it is a genuine threat to your dog.

Here's a helpful site that could help you determine how much of a threat the chocolate your dog may be to her.

In the end, it was an accident and a learning experience, so don't beat yourself up about it. It would be best to make sure it doesn't happen again though and having a product like Toxiban activated charcoal is always a good idea, paticularly if your dog is small and therefore more likey to consume a toxic amount of chocolate or another substance...The best of luck to you and your dog!

Gosh some of your replies are so panic stricken. Your dog won't die from eating the chocolate. Most it will do is get diarrhoea. My dogs have stolen chocolate on more than one occasion and have always been fine. Years ago people fed chocolate to their dogs all the time and no harm came to them. Then someone somewhere said it was poisonous and everyone panics. Just keep an eye on your dog, but it will be fine.

That depends on the size of your dog. If you have a small dog, you should probably call the vet. If your dog is medium to large, then it should be ok. I have a 30 pound wheaten terrier and he ate a whole chocolate bar before. He just ended up throwing up alittle but he was fine. Just watch out for his/her behavior. If it seems abnormal in any way, call your vet. Just keep a close eye.

Well, unless the 1/4 of a chocolate bar was equal to 1/3 of your dog's body weight, it will be fine. Worse case scenario, you're looking at a nasty bout of diarrhea.

Chocolate is toxic, but in VERY large quantities. Processed chocolate, like a candy bar, is less toxic because of all the other ingredients. Bakers or Dark chocolate are a lot more dangerous, but it still takes a lot before reaching toxic levels.

Depends on what size the dog is and whether she/he definitely ate all of the chocolate. If its a large dog you may well get away with it but a smaller dog may have problems. Feeding bread is meant to absorb some of the toxins but to be honest you should contact your vet as the dog may well need to have his/her kidneys flushed. Dont just leave it to chance as chocolate can kill a dog in hours xxxxxxxx

The best thing is to ring the vets. my bessie (collie cross)eats our chocolate a fair bit, but a vet can give the best advise. Bessie is 16 and a half years old. Please post us to let us know the dog is alright. I really hope all goes well Love. Dogs love the flavor of chocolate, but chocolate in sufficient doses is lethally toxic to dogs (and horses and possibly cats).

the conventional puppy would be in simple terms fantastic after having some licks of darkish chocolate ice cream. It takes a extensive quantity of chocolate to adversely impact a dogs... some dogs ought to have reasonable abdomen soreness or the runs, yet that could desire to be it. once you're frightened, shop a distinctive eye on him for a pair of days. you are able to consistently shop attempting to realize your vet over the telephone, just to reassure your self. :)

So many replies with the "Panic" button pressed. Your dog should be fine. Yes chocolate is toxic to dogs but the dog has to eat it constantly and I mean CONSTANTLY over a long period of time. Take it for a walk- then again in the morning. If the dog goes to eat grass, let it- it will eventually vomit it up and all will be well. :)
Dog's eat poo- a little chocolate won't kill it.

Most dog owners are now aware that chocolate has the capacity to seriously harm or even kill our greedy, canine pals. Many vets experience calls from dog owners who are panic sticken because their pet has eaten a bar of chocolate by mistake or somebody has given their dog some chocolate without realsiing the potential harm it can do.

So, let's get straight to the point. Can chocolate kill dogs?

The short answer is yes. Chocolate can indeed cause a dog to die if ingested in enough quantitiy.

A single, shop purchased bar of chocolate is not going to kill your dog. It's unlikely it would even harm the dog in any great deal so let's not get too anxious.

Your dog has to ingest quite a bit of chocolate to feel any negative effects. It is the caffeine and bromethalin in chocolate that is poisonous to your dog. Dark baker's chocolate is most toxic to your dog since it contains a high amount of caffeine and bromethalin. Milk chocolate and white chocolate have lower amounts of caffeine.

Whilst chocolate has its fatally poisonous qualities when eaten by dogs, it's by no means one of the biggest toxic dangers in your home.

Rat Poison: Rat poison can be found in city alleys and streets near garbage cans and dumpsters. Rat poison comes in pellet form - red or green. Rat poison is tasty to rats and, unfortunately, to dogs too.

If your dog has ingested some rat poison, call your vet immediately. Rat poison can cause your dog to bleed from his mouth, nose and rectal area. If not treated quickly, your dog can bleed to death. If your dog happens to eat a rat that has been poisoned, your dog can be affected depending upon the amount of poison the rat ingested. Play it safe by calling your vet immediately.

Extermination: When your house is being exterminated, ask your exterminator what is a safe amount of time to keep your dog from the rooms that are being treated. Keep your dog from walking in areas that may still be slightly wet with pesticide. The pesticide can get on his paws which will get into his mouth if he starts licking them.

Household Cleaners and Disinfectants: If your dog has ingested household cleaners or disinfectants, then read the instruction label on the back to see if vomiting needs to be induced. You don't want to induce vomiting on certain products because this can irritate the esophagus. You can induce vomiting by putting your finger down your dog's throat, if you are comfortable doing this. Otherwise, give your dog a hydrogen peroxide solution (one tablespoon per 30 pounds of your dogs body weight).

House Plants: There are numerous household plants that are toxic for your dog. Some of the popular houseplants that are toxic include philodendrons, azaleas, rhododendron, Easter lilies, amaryllis, fox glove and Japanese lilies. Consult with your vet if you have any questions about house plants that you may have in your house.
