You may have epicondylitis (often known as "tennis elbow"). The pain and swelling would respond to an anti-inflammatory. See your doctor for a definite diagnosis and possibly a brace and medications to help resolve it.

I have exactly the same thing in my left thumb joint and elbow.

My Rheumatologist has no great answer. He thinks Osteoarthritis.

Icing and IBUPROFEN helps considerably. If your doctor will prescribe Prednisone plus a cortisone shot, it should go away and give you a break.

I have been battling this problem for three years. First both knees, jaw hinge, right and left wrist and thumb joints, now left elbow and left thumb joint. Most Always worst upon awakening. I would put my hands over my head to help the pain.

I take Vicodin daily and Sulfasalazine and Prednisone as needed to be reasonably pain free.

These seem to be a type of AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER.
That will just lead you to many types of illnesses.

Good Luck.

sounds like you have given yourself a 'dead' arm. Is it possible that you have slept on it and temporarily pressed on a nerve. This is often painful when feeling is returning to the arm and gives the sensation of the hand being swollen. If this seems unlikely you would be well placed to go see your doctor.
