The Bible makes a distinction between the words happiness and joy. Happiness is dependent on what happens, hence the word. Something you want happens and you are happy but sad if it doesn't. Joy on the other hand is a permanent quality within someone in whom the Spirit of God resides and is not in the least influenced by what happens outwardly. So, in answer to your question it all depends on motive, ie why are you helping others? Because it makes you feel good, then you will have happiness. Because God's love motivates you? Then you will have joy.

Try it and find out! There's a secular saying "Tis better to give than to receive", it's much along the same lines.

Happiness does come from helping others. You feel a sense of accomplishment, you receive a sense of appreciation, and you feel like if you were ever in such a position, you would be helped as well. It just makes for a much more friendly place.

Happiness is helping others and being free from religion. The purpose of religion is to talk you down and feel guilty and bad. Then they sell you a solution to you imaginary problems.
Freedom from religion and gods, but care for your fellow human being and being good and nice brings true happiness in the here and now.

i have wondered this for years.. call me dishonest if you like, but if i find a wallet in the middle of a parking lot, the "evilness" smiles. the question of morals behind, returning the wallet and returning the wallet empty, is a matter of timing to me.
