I've owned a Mio, a TomTom, a Navigon, and now a Garmin. This is no easy answer to this question because of all the factors (cost, size, etc)... BUT I can tell you, unlike others, I hated my TomTom One so much that I returned it after 1 day. The Navigon was nice - but the text was too small and hard to read - even though it was a standard 3.5" screen. The Mio was really great - BUT customer support was not so great and getting updates and fixes to bugs was almost nonexistant. That brings me to my Garmin 250W... which is the nicest of all the units because it works very well - the routes it picks seem to be about the best I have seen - and most importantly - the support is outstanding. I plugged in my 250W to my computer via the USB cable and instantly the Garmin software told me there was a firmware update available to speed up the map drawing times on screen and even addtional voices were avail to me... all FREE! They also release map updates twice a year... which, with some of these other companies, I don't think you are going to get that kind of service. Whatever you pick - enjoy! GPS is one of those rare inventions that comes along and can really change your life.

Because GPS in and of itself is not a service, it's a product. All you are buying is a piece of machinery that receives a satellite signal. On the other hand, most GPS manufacturers will sell you an update package for that $5 to $10 a month that updates the underlying info (roads, restaurants, gas stations, etc.). This is a service not a product.

TomTom is the #1 selling GPS in the world because they are better then any other brand, They have made many innovative strides such as mapshare so you don't have to pay for updates they also own there map provider which is also rated #1 teleatlas therefore making them more affordable, the garmins are good but more expensive, do your self a favor and buy a TomTom so you can be happy.....ren

I have the Tom Tom One 3rd Edition and I like it (it's on sale lately for about $150.00). Before I bought mine, I did searches and saw very few bad comments about it -- mostly that there should be more information in the quick start guide (the full manual is on their website -- not in the package). In October a consumer magazine rated it a best buy after testing over a dozen units (there were several units that were rated higher -- but they were more expensive). I update my GPS every week for free from the TomTom website.

Garmin Garmin Garmin.

Dependable, great customer service and long lasting.

Magellan is lousy and for some reason is not that accurate if your looking for precise up to 20 ft closeness.

Garmin will get you 2 feet away from your destination.
