I'm thinking of getting a dog and someone told me they lost a lot of weight from having to go walkies twice a day. Has anyone experienced this too? (I'm not getting a dog for this reason at all, but it would be a fabulous bonus!)

Any type of walking will help you lose weight if it's done everyday. Don't just get a dog for that reason, get a dog because you want one. Then adopt it. Don't buy it.

I used to walk my Shih-Tzu for 30 minutes a day and I wasn't loosing weight. After a few years I got a Lab and I walk her for 2 hours a day. I lost 40 lbs within six months.

I have to bring my aging Shih-Tzu home after half an hour because he gets very tired, but once he's home I can walk full speed with my lab for a good hour more then another hour later on in the evening.

If you can make the time to walk your dog for at least an hour a day it will make a big difference.

Sure....
Regular dog-walk will help to lose the weight-but of the dog...
for u, u will have to walk a lot free, without any obligations or help of some dog.
sure it would be good reason for u to take a walk(evening) but to lose weight u will have to walk briskly for at least an hour or so...

Having a dog,, you do have to make time DAILY not only for the quick walks,, but excersise walks,, alot of people get involved with agility (active sport) or daily training sessions..
The truth is if you do not wimp out, and actually work and interact with your dog on a daily basis.. then you will be up and about,, doing things not sitting at home.. so yes you will be in better shape,,, and possibly loose weight...
This is my favorite thing about dogs,, they have to be taken care of,, worked trained and loved,, it requires me to get out every day,, be active,, I cannot just sit at home,, watch TV,, be sick, so they keep me going,, ufotunally although fenced yards are great,, too often it is far to easy to just put the dogs out, to play,, and go back in,, or people use tie outs the same way.. Vs actually taking the dog out,, themselves,, so it is possible in this situation not only do the humans loose the excersise/activity/interation benifit of dog ownership,, the dog also loose out..

Walking helps burn calories, but of course you don't need to have a dog with you. But walking your dog is a great way to stay motivated. It can be hard to get up early and go walking, but if you know you'll be disappointing your canine friend if you pike out, it makes it much easier.

I walk/jog with my dogs and I go a lot further than if I did it alone. Plus they make great company :)

i reckon any daily exercise would help you lose weight!

i mean getting a dog would encourage you do the regular exercise for their is a clearer purpose and you tend to walk longer with a dog!
(and it would be like killing to birds with one stone, wouldn't it?)

but if u really want to lose the weight
along side the exercise
i suggest drinking alot of fluids and eating a boilded egg before every meal
good luck!

That depends entirely how far you walk your dog. I take my dog out 3 times a day for about 45 minutes each time - I cover about 2 miles each time. Calorie requirement for walking is about 50 per mile ( up to 100 per mile if you run with the dog!) - so I use about 300 calories perday just walking the dog - ( average person eats 2000 - 2500 calories per day) . So, yes that will keep you fitter/thinner than if you didn't do it! ( as long as you don't reward yourself with a chocolate for doing it!)

Yes because you are walking....you could acheive the same effect by just walking without a dog, but walking a dog gives you a sense of purpose while walking and you tend to walk longer than if you were to just walk alone.
