my wife has gotten a fake 20 and a 50 in the last month and a half, taxi drivers in Shanghai in the maroon taxis both times, I heard that there is an influx in fake 20's this year so be aware, best way to tell a real one, scratch Chairman Mao's shirt if you feel raised ridges it is real, also you can buy a little pen light that is for IDing fake bills, you can get them at most markets for about 10-15 RMB

I had a 50 (which I gave away by accident) and a 10, which I still keep.

Easiest way to check is, look at Mao, look at his jacked, you can feel the ink structure with your fingers. It's very rough. Try that on a new bill first.

My advise is, do not change 100 at dubious places, that is i.e. taxi drivers. Make sure you always have a thick stack of small notes.

If you must change a note, check your note before you hand it out, and make sure the receive sees you checking it. Otherwise he may swap it and will say it was fake.

I got RMB100, 50, and 10 fake bills. No way you can pass back as locals(except foreigners) normally verify them carefully.

Feel the bill texture to find the fake ones.

The texture is different, also, feel it, it is quite different also. Throw away fake bill, don't hurt anyone!
