I have watched the Golden compass and I have read all the books and can see the underlying theme that Philip Pullman is trying to portray.
In the Golden compass, the magisterium is being portrayed as the church who will do anything to try and prevent the discovery of anything new (dust). Does this notsound like the Church of long ago?

The radical right wing Christians want to control the media and us in general just like Radical Islam.

That is exactly PP's point. He is a committed atheist and he is pointing out how the Church has moved away from the true meaning of spirit and souls (Dust) and is a power-hungry entity who will do anything (including mutilating children) to achieve their goals.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read all the books plus a few interviews with PP. Apparently the movie is very sanitised in terms of criticising the church anyway.

Was it good? Can't wait to see it!

How can a narrative set in a fantasy international be attacking Catholicism?? I advise, possibly that's, i don't be attentive to. i be attentive to no longer something with reference to the Golden Compass, yet I in simple terms locate that somewhat ironic. Is the dude that wrote the e book like the nemesis of Tolkein and Lewis or something?

It is not the fact that the church is portrayed as corrupt but the idea of killing God does not sit very well with me. I read the books and did no enjoy them or the world view that they tried to present.

Quite frankly I do not care about it. If someone wants to waste the money then they can go see it, I however will not. If someone wants to pay for me then I will most likely go but I have no desire to spend my money on something that I do not care about.

Hmmm..........Did I just travel back a few weeks in time....

This is still late December...

No...I didn't travel back in time, you're just a few weeks behind the rush!

BTW, I think anything that is making fun of someone would be offensive to that person, especially when it's done in a crude way such as GC has...

I wanted to see it, but none of the theaters had it...go figure, most theaters don't want to carry something that offends 1/3 of the worlds population and 80%+ of the country's population...

The Bible is loaded with metaphors - so is this story. And if "Magisterium" represents "God", and "God" gets killed, then "God" can't possibly be "God", because "God" is supposed to be omnipotent.

The church opposes the movie because it has the guts to oppose the church. With more people becoming smarter every year (average of 3% increase in IQ every year?) eventually they will figure out that the Christian church has a history of deception, and that Christianity itself is based on a series of historical distortions. How many Christians know the truth about the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., where it was finally "decided by committee" that Jesus was "divine", i.e., "God"? Why did it take 325 years for "God" to be acknowledged AS God? Learn history, learn the truth.

Well, they kill God at the end of the third book. So I think the Church has a very legitimate reason for not liking this movie.

Philip Pullman's goal is to convince children that God does not exist. Christians will naturally take a stand against this, including me.

They would do anything to come in the news, so people forget about the child molestation trials.
One would expect they have learned by now that their so called protests are only extra publicity for a movie. Maybe they have shares in Hollywood?

Hasn't the Church already 'killed God' by doing unspeakable things in his name throughout history?
