Yes, it's incredible, isn't it?
Most of the people that moan about the police are either people who have been caught doing something they shouldn't, or relatives and friends of people who have been caught.
Am I the only one that thinks the police do a fantastic job? Why should they have this bad image/reputation?

Thank you for your vote of confidence. Being a police officer, I came into this job, thinking those that fear the police hate the police. I have found that an old saying we have "No one likes the police until they need us", holds true. People in America hate authority, if we didn't we never would have broken from England. However, with that said there are a few out there that are like you, and we love to meet you. I have friends and family members, who are not criminals, but do not talk to me simply because I wear a badge. To those I say I'm better off without them. I just wish everyone who come into contact with the police realize we are human to and have bad days. Only when we have bad days someone can get hurt or killed, and that's us. BUTTTT anyway. Thank you for caring, keep us in your prayers and remember if we didn't truly want to help our fellow man, we never would have put on the badge.

Then how do you explain me?

The only times I've ever been pulled over or arrested were times that I WASN'T breaking any laws.. and the time of my life that I was breaking law after law after law was while I was in very good graces with the local constabulary.

Not that I actually hate the police, but, that I recognize them as the evil in society that they are; often a lesser evil than some other form of societal plague, but never anything more than a lesser evil.

No, you're not the only one who thing that the police do a fantastic job, but I can guarantee that if you were ever deputized and given the license to kill a man whom you later learned was the most innocent of the potential suspects present at the scene, or if you learned that the constabulary gives some people the green light to go around breaking law after law after law in order to entice the local citizenry into following that example, so that the local constabulary can start writing more citations and making more arrests to increass their revenues and justify their continued tenure, and that this doesn't just happen at home, but all over the country, and likely all over the whole wide world, then you'd come away with a different idea about their 'fantastic' job.

They have this bad image/reputation, because they've earned it, and continue to earn it.

If they actually did their jobs and did them competently, more of them would have worked themselves out of their jobs.

Everybody that wants to complain about the police well you walk that dark alley one night and watch your partner die in your hands. Yes we are human and of course we have bad eggs on every department in the US, but you can't lump all officers in one category because of the bad ones. Every company, state agency and/or federal agency has bad eggs. We do what we can with the resources that are provided, we can never make every citizen happy thats a fact, they complain if we aren't there then when we are there and a crime goes down we shoot some kid that pulled a gun they still complain. Criminal don't like the police because they know we know they are up to no good and its a matter of time before we lock the idiot up AGAIN only for the courts to release him to society....It sucks, but guess what many wouldn't want this job if it was given to them. Little pay, tons of hours, court everytime you have a lock up and you don't see your family much. Why, because we believe is public safety and try to make a difference so please be a bit more courtous when lumping the good cops in with the bad cops, some of us take pride in what we do and get a good feeling when we can make a difference.

Thanks for the pat on the back.

No one likes the person who has to dish out the discipline.
You catch people completely red handed doing something and they still hate you because you are bringing them in.

I don't do this job for the love and adoration and don't take any of the insults/name calling personally.

You can't please everybody when doing this job either. Many times you do your best to help them with their situation and they still think that you didn't do enough or that you didn't do the right thing. The issue is that you are involved in situations that were caused by a huge number of societal factors (alcoholism, poverty, drug abuse, poor parenting) and you are expected to "fix" it. When you don't, people call you lazy.

Most of us do the best we can with the resources that we have and always keep coming home at the end of the shift a priority.

I HAVE BEEN IN POLICE (L/E) WORK SINCE HIGH SCHOOL 1965 AND JUST RETIRED IN 2007 AFTER 42 YEARS .(WAS A STRAIGHT ARROW)

I HAVE SEEN THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY PARTS TO THE BUSINESS. NO WE ARE ALL NOT PERFECT. JUST THAT WHEN AND OFFICER ABUSES THE LAW, WE HAVE 10,000 CAMERAS TO TELL THE STORY. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A NEWS OR CAMERA PERSON REPORT THE WRONG STORY, ONLY TO SEE A FRONT PAGE NEWS ITEM RETRACTED, BUT ONLY TO BE FOUND SOMEWHERE HIDDEN IN THE OBITUARY COLUMNS?
THE STORY WAS FRONT PAGE NEWS AND OOPS WRONG ANGLE OOOPS WE ERRORED, LIKE TELLING A JURY TO DISRGUARD WHEN ALREADY IMPLANTED AS A THOUGHT?
FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT LIKE US, TRY WALKING IN MY SHOES FOR A DAY. MOST OF YOU THAT CRITICISE WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY I WOULD NEVER HAVE YOUR JOB. SO IF YOU WILL NOT HAVE IT THEN WHO WILL?
THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS. WE HAVE TO ACCEPT ALMOST ANYONE BECAUSE WE ARE SO SHORT HANDED, WE ARE UNDER COURT ORDERS TO HIRE MORE OFFICERS IN PRISONS AND CANNOT HIRE BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO WORK IN THAT ENVIORNMENT?
THE PRISON I RETIRED FROM WAS 30 OFFICERS SHORT?(JUST ONE PRISON AND RUNS 24/7?)
IF YOUR COMPANY WAS 30 SHORT HOW EFFECTIVE WOULD YOU BE? WITH ALL THE PUBLIC HATE TOWARDS POLICE, IS IT NO WONDER WE HAVE A PROBLEM RECRUITING?
IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO RECRUIT OR BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OF COURT THEN YOU HAVE TO LOWER YOUR ONCE HIGH STANDARDS.
YOU AS A PUBLIC CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE POLITICS INVOLVED IN QUOTAS FOR HIRE, MINORITIES, WOMEN, EQUALITY, RACIAL BALANCING, SELECTION CRITERIA FOR PROMOTIONS AND COURT ORDERED HIRING MANDATES TO ACHIEVE RATIOS OF INMATE TO OFFICER STANDARDS.
OH BY THE WAY, THIS IS NOT FOR THE OFFICERS INVOLVED BUT FOR THE INMATES NOT FILING A LAW SUIT.
SO WE NOW HIRE GANG MEMBERS THAT ARE KNOWN MEMBERS TO WORK IN A PRISON BECAUSE THEY WERE NEVER ARRESTED?
LIKE THE MOVIE A FEW GOOD MEN " THE TRUTH, YOU WANT THE TRUTH, YOU COULD NOT HANDLE THE TRUTH."

They do a good job with the resources they have...but unfortunately, there are some who work in the police force who couldn't give a sh!t.

I recently contacted the police to inform them that there was a suspicious person checking out cars in the cul de sac where I live. I was informed that someone would be out.

a car was vandalised by being set on fire..the fire spread to 2 adjacent cars....I phoned the fire services twice before they arrived...and they took 15mins....and the fire was out 10mins before the police arrived.

Soooo as I law abiding citizen...I was pretty disgusted at their ability to get to the area 30 mins later at 2.30 on a Tuesday morning when they weren't busy and the station is less than 1 mile away.

So I do understand people's distrust of the service provided by the police.

I am not a law breaker but a victim and I don't like the Police, in fact 3 Officers are facing disciplinary proceedings for the way in which my case was handled.

I think people have a right to complain if they see a police officer doing something wrong.
If a cop does something wrong and other cops protect him, then they're not good cops either.
It's not an "us vs. them" thing. Cops are supposed to protect and serve with taxpaper's money.
If a cop oversteps a line with a power trip or abuse of a citizen, then they should be punished in the appropriate way, like everyone else.
If cops are never punished for misbehavior, then we have a police state.

I'm no law breaker.. and i beg to differ with you Officer

i have seen how the police in the USA are. they are cruel cold and corrupt. not to mention murderous, the cops can't wait to kill an unarmed citizen. and the level of courage is very poor . just look at how many it takes to arrest someone.. if you listen to then yelling orders to a suspect. it proves just how scared they really are. i watch their actions and body language. it expounds fear . this is why they are so brutal and kill so often it is how they cover the truth from you and them selves.

in my life I've never seen a bunch so bad in a first world nation. the UK is a bit better for the most part. they also show some behaviour like the American police. the difference is most here are professional and do not need firearms to do the job or hide behind. they also give orders and don't need to yell them.( for the most part) they are also not scared and the population here still trusts and respects police , unlike the USA

many friends of mine live in the USA and all say the same thing. live in fear of the police in the USA. they (police)are terrified of the civilian population and have made it them against us to cover this up . they will shoot anyone a justify it any way they can, it is sad when you can't trust those you employ to protect you.

all of my Friends in the USA and here in the UK and those i see visiting both nations will say the same thing. the points i just pointed out are my own and their observations and none of them are law breakers.

we can assume you are a cop who wrote the question

I disagree with you. I am not from your country and I am not a law breaker but policemen!! I must say a few of them are nice. I am living in a different country from my country of birth but all police are the same. Most of them are worse than the thugs and murderers in the streets. Most of them live on drugs and many are very rude and have no respect. They treat other people as if they themselves should be the only ones living in any country. Most of them carry themselves as if they own everybody else. Very few are nice and they are difficult to find and distinguish from the rotten lot. I would love to love the policement but, arrgg!
