I love my camera!
But I can't work out how to fire the flash for fill-in in strong sunlight. Any ideas?

In strong sunlight, it's quite possible that the flash isn't strong enough to do fill flash. You are competing with the sun after all.

Things to remember:
1) keep your shutter speed at 1/500 or slower (that's the flash sync speed).

2) put your subjects in shade. get closer if you can.

3) the pop-up flash is not strong enough to compete with the sun at full brightness; a flash in the hotshoe might be strong enough if you're close enough. At ISO 200, the guide number is 56 (in feet) on your D50. By comparison, a hot shoe flash like the SB-800 has a guide number of 125 at ISO 100, so it's a lot more powerful.

4) Essentially, you have to tone down the power of the sun to give your flash a chance to compete. Pros do this by putting the subjects in shade or by screening the sun or by using reflectors or some combination of these methods.

If you're just asking how to fire the flash, just pop up the flash on the camera via the button on the side of the flash housing. It should fire automatically after being popped up.

I quite have the two cameras so i grants you an answer from having used the two and not in basic terms finding on the specs on merely a splash paperp.human beings make the theory that merely because of the fact a extra moderen digital camera has extra megapixels then it would needless to say be extra useful. no longer genuine. the two those digital camera have the comparable length sensors. there is in basic terms plenty megapixels which would be squeezed right into a sensor length formerly having diminishing returns and that i ought to stay that's what those extra moderen cameras are affected by.the extra helpful aspects and extra mp's that are crammed in, then the extra stable the processor has to artwork. My D50, which by the style can no longer in basic terms use the older lenses however the hot dx vr ones too, works super and consistently outperforms the d3100 each and every time, noticeably in low gentle. do no longer be fooled by utilising the megapixel anticipate a digital camera. i'd choose a used D50 over a extra moderen d3000 variety Nikon each and every time. For all intents and purposes, those cameras are extra advantageous than sufficient and much extra useful than maximum new ones.

If the subject is close enough, like 20-25 feet at most ISO's (I'm not looking it up as I answer...), just use any non-auto mose, like P,A,S, or M, and pop up the flash. It ought to work fine. Use the spot meter on your main suject - the one you want lit properly. Using "SLOW" sync works out best for lower light situations. You can play with flash EV compensation once you get it going the "usual" way.

Sorry, Anthony. I answered without checking the other answers and yours is excellent. If I get more tech details later, I will add them, but you covered this very well.
