I've just got a replacement power adapter for an external hard drive, I've set it to the right voltage but the jack at the end can be attached to the power supply so that the positive is either on the inside or the outside of the jack plug. The only symbol that I see on the hard drive is a solid line above three dashes. I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

I went with the option of doing it one way, nothing happened so I turned it round and it seems to be working fine.

Ignore the last two people who replied.
All the solid line with 3 dashes under it means is that it is DC voltage.

solidline with 3 dashes sounds to me like the earth that is the negative part.

usually these things are made foolproof , if you connect it the wrong way it doesnt work and no harm is done.
