like my band teacher amazes me. how do you know where ur hands go in mid air? like how does he do that? what is he, some sort of a magician? whats going on up there, with the spazzy hands? like what liek is there a certain way like a certain place ur hand should be on count 1 and 2 and whatever? i wanna know! he seems to be having so much fun up there!

Yup each time signiture has a basic pattern done by right hand! and the left hand controls the dynamics cues etc! Like this

It is fun! You should try its sometime! Maybe when your parents aren't home so you dont look crazy! Turn the music up loud and go for it!

I agree with the second answer.
Conducting is studied, just like performance or any music profession. You learn how to read scores, how to interpret the music for yourself, what gestures signify what, how to analyze, you make decisions on the "moments" of the piece, you learn music education so you can help your students master the instruments...and so much more. it's a very demanding, skiled craft. You basically learn how to pull the music out of the students and teach them to be musicians.
You can specialize in it once you get to college. Why not ask your band director about it? Tell them you're interested in conducting.

It takes years of training to be an accomplished conductor. Music theory must be mastered and understood for all instruments involved and the conductor must have a strong grasp of emotional and instructional guidance for his musicians.

It isn't accomplished overnight.
