As far as your imagination takes. If you believe that they are millions of light years away then they are much far. If you believe they are imaginary then they do not exist in your mind. The holy books give you a description of heaven and hell but since they are written or narrated by men in middle ages they don't give an estimated distance in kilometers, miles or light years how far they are from here. Forget the distance, they don't even give you an precise location where heaven and hell are located.

Both are higher and lower dimensions of reality not earthly level of distance. Pope Benedict at Christmas taught heaven is not a geographical place but in the heart where God reveals himself and his love. The distance is spiritual in the sense that someone who loves you is close but one who hates you is distant.

I'm a non believer, but I believe I can tell you what they will say. Heaven and Hell are (allegedly) planes of existence..so dont exist on the physical plane as we do, therefore distance is irrelevant. And you get there...by dying dont you?
