Yes, it's true. I don't think that all places use the lie detector though. I had to do it 2 times!

Not all agencies use it. Mostly repeats of questions on your application and in your interview. It is more to see if you lie than any suspicion that it will turn up a terrible secret. But any lie, and you're done for. Obviously, the older you were when you did something, the more it will be taken seriously. Thieves are not welcome, but something like stealing a comic book when you were ten won't matter. Chronic drug use or hard drug use will likely do you in. A one-time experiment with cocaine when you were 18 might not. Sex offenses when you were old enough to know better will likely be a real problem. (Remember, they are considering putting people in you power.) They will not, for instance, go after you for something like stealing a radio from WalMart three years ago. If it comes out that you murdered Uncle John for the inheritance would do it, but you're not going to admit to that, just get caught lying that you didn't. Small things won't be a problem most places. Almost no one can truthfully say they've never stolen anything. Be truthful on the application and interview, so you can tell the same truth later.

A GOOD POLYGRAPH OPERATOR WILL ADMINISTER THE TEST WITH BACKGROUND INFORMATION KNOWN ABOUT YOU. THE OPERATOR WILL ELICIT QUESTIONS TO MAKE YOU LIE OR TELL THE TRUTH.
IN THE INITIAL SET UP I USE TO ASK YOUR NAME AND GIVE THE WRONG NAME TO SEE YOUR RESPONSE.
ALL THE TEST DOES IS SEEK THE TRUTH ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL. IT CANNOT BE USED AGAINST YOU IN A COURT OF LAW. FOR INSTANCE LETS SAY YOU HAD A DRIVING RECORD VIOLATION. IF I WOULD ASK, WERE YOU ARRESTED FOR SPEEDING ON XX XX XXXX DATE. YES SHOULD BE THE RESPONSE. MANY FEEL THAT THEY WERE NOT ARRESTED BECAUSE THEY WERE GIVEN A TICKET? THUS THEY RESPOND NO BOTH ARE CORRECT ANSWERS AND BOTH WOULD BE CORRECTLY ANSWERED.
SO THE POLYGRAPH EXAMINER MUST SCREEN ALL QUESTIONS BASED UPON A TRUE RESPONSE TO GET AN ACCURATE READING OF WHOM THE DEPARTMENT WOULD BE HIRING.
A GOOD QUESTION AND USUALLY ASKED IS DO YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND. KNOWING YOU DO THE ANSWER SHOULD BE YES.

It is true, many, but not all, departments have polygraph testing requirements within their hiring proceedures. Questions are random but generally focused on your possible involvement with any previous drug or gang activity.

Yes it is popular in many countries, but it is not used in the normal sense. More to confirm ability. After all what use is a policeman that can't tell lies?

A LIE DETECTOR TEST CANT TELL IF YOUR LIEING OR NOT, IT ONLY READS YOUR HEART RATE. THEIR GOING OFF OF MERE INSTANCE TO DECLARE IF YOUR LYING TO THEM. BEST THING TO DO IS RELAX AND ANSWER TEH QUESTION CALM, EVEN IF YOUR LYING. I TOOK A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR COURSE. AN THATS DEFINETLY SOMETHING THEY PUT OUT TO YOU AS AN PRIVATE INVESTIGTOR. BASICALLY COVER YOUR ***.
