it is true that the youth today is more inclined towards engineering where one earns money in a shorter span of time. but has the earlier satisfaction of having cured a patient and having given new life to him, ceased to exist today or has this world become extremely materialistic?

It is not about opting. Many people try each year, but the selection procedure in India filters out the ones that are not good (Unfortunately that tests memory and not intelligence) hence there are lesser students who reach the success.

As far as opting is concerned, the question is answered, it is very long, requires hard-work. And the most common reason that I have come across is that people don't like learning up names, and that is what human anatomy and physiology is all about. Secondly, some people are squeamish and don't like to cut open a human body.

Well, that might not be the case all over India, with people wanting to do medicine and the small number of seats coupled with reservation makes things tougher for students to get into a college.
It is also believed now that a simple degree of medicine is not adequate i.e. MBBS, but specialisation is a must ! This whole process takes around 10 years all together!, and then, get a job, settle down, takes a hell more!
Besides its not an easy task, someone's life may b at stake, and yeah ...may b the world has become materialistic as all humans fight to survive in this world of competition and solidity, because in a country like India where maximum of the population doesnt belong to the high class, people dont have the resources nor the time...

Medicine is a Profession which doesn't click for everyone. And apart from that in medicine you have to specialize in something like, ENT, Heart etc. That will take another 2-3 years. But on the other hand if you do engineering you will get a job when you are in the final year of the course through a campus recruitment with good remuneration. Todays world is driven by money and only money which you will not get much if you do Medicine.

I think that its true. May not be because, people have become materialistic. But for their limitations.

First thing is studying medicine is not "reachable" for most of the middle class people. Even if you take loan, you have to repay that. You will not get settled till atleast 40 years of age to start proper earning. How can you think of repayment? If you have enough support from ur parents or relatives or friends to start something on your own, once you finish ur studies, its different. But most of them will not have that chance.

i'm one of the few girls in my batch who opted for medicine. my friends say they chose engineering b'coz it's a lot easier to get into an eng college rather than med college. but i don't live in India and my friends aren't Indians.
