I have all the ingredients, even the garlic and onions. Sometimes I just lack some cartons of milk in my refrigerator. Any suggestions about the substitute?

There are a million choices, each one has a slightly different flavor.

Cream, evaporated milk (not condensed), broth (any type), the water the taters cooked in, yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, doubling your butter (yes, it works)...or any liquid that would go with taters! Including water...yes, water.

Try doing them with cheddar cheese and butter...and eliminate the liquid. Very tasty.

Make them without or use a bit of the water you boiled the potatoes in. Doubling the butter will only make them greasy.
Buy a small box of powdered milk and you will never have this problem again.

if youve ever watched cooking shows.. a lot of chef's use just chicken stock (or any good stock, vegetable, beef, whatever you have) or use a boullion cube with a couple cups of hot water. or just the cooking water saved after draining the potatoes.. If youve got some sour cream, yogurt or cream cheese on hand, you can use that too.. or velveta cheese grated into potatoes are delicious..

Some people use chicken broth as a low fat substitute. If you're not concerned about that sour cream makes a good substitute.

Yes, you can double the butter. Sour cream or plain yogurt works as well. If you have unsweetened condensed milk, use that.

Some people use water. Also, for less fattening mashed potatoes, use chicken broth instead of milk.
