this label, and others like eau de parfum, refer to the concentration of scent. eau do toilette had about a one to six percent concentration so it's more light and doesn't linger as long and is more like a strong body splash. And eau do parfum is a more potent mixture and "perfume" is the most potent, and expensive of the bunch.

Basically, it's a scale for scent concentration

Long ago, when men shaved and ladies put on makeup and did their hair, the table they used was called a "toilette". They would say that they were "making their toilette", which means they were cleaning up a tad.

Eau means scent. "Eau de fleur" means scent of flowers.

Therefore, "eau de toilette" means the fragrance that is on your dressing table.

It's all in the translation.

literally, it means "toilet water"

think about it... you go to the bathroom (aka 'the toilet') to freshen up... like putting on perfume
