There isn't enough room here to answer all that you ask.
The first thing is you become a member of an elite corps of soldiers. Ones respected and admired by many, and some are just jealous they didn't have what it takes to join.
You learn not only how to fight, but to uphold a proud tradition and work as a team with your fellow Marines and how to follow orders and fear no one! How to survive not only in military life but in civilian life as well.

You can pick from many fields in the Marine Corps, anything from being a grunt (infantry soldier) to Flying a jet. The Marine Corps fights both on the ground and in the air.

You learn to ignore stupid remarks by people who know nothing (i.e. the nickname bullet sponges) etc etc as those are often comments by those who are jealous and don't share the pride of their service.

But the most important thing is that you "EARN" the title of U.S. Marine, unlike others who can only say they served in the military and have no Esprit de Corps.

There is a reason why we are called "The Few, The Proud, The Marines".

Semper Fi and good luck to you.

Sorry, I had to say it: To Blogbaba, while I also have the utmost respect for the Marines, and must agree with you on the first part, we have been in Iraq for more that 7 years now, and the Marines have yet to get past the insurgent issue. Chalk it up to leadership issues, huh?

I was medical corps in the Army. We had a name for Marines: bullet sponges.

Don't be a sucker. Go to school, get your 4 year degree, and join as an officer. The pay is much better, the benefits are much better, and if you are still so gung ho at that time, you can lead from the front and actually earn the respect of your troops, not just get it becuase of your rank (which is most often the case).

Jarheads are some of the toughest, classiest, most professional soldiers on the planet. I got nothing but respect for them, and can assure you, no objective or military force on the planet would last very long against the U.S. Marines.
