Depakote is not used to TREAT migraine headaches. It is, however, used to prevent migraine headaches.
In the management of headaches there are two basic stages of migraine management. Prevention techniques, including prophylactic medications and lifestyle changes, and rescue techniques, where the migraine pain is treated with a medication to abort or cover the pain.
If a person has a significant number of migraines, then the headaches need to be prevented. The best medications for this are proving to be those traditionally prescribed for the management of epileptic disorders. Depakote is commonly used, and is one of the older antiepileptic medications currently being used in migraine prophylaxsis.

Hi,
Yes Depakote is used frequently as a preventative for Migraine. I have a couple thousand patients on it. Generally speaking it is taken at night as the main sided effect is sedation. This is a benefit to most migraineurs who cannot get/or stay asleep at night.
Depakote is not used in seizure dosing for migraines, but rather a lower, pediatric dose. It should reduce the frequency and pain level of your headaches. Most patients are on it for a few months to a year to "calm things down" so to speak and then can come off it.
Lifestyle changes are the bigggest thing that can affect migraines. And lifestyle (stress) is the biggest trigger.

I'm sorry for your pain -- I understand. Migraines do not always come with nausea or light sensitivity, believe me! I am a 10 year sufferer with constant migraines, about 40 years total sporadically. The severe ones started when I was perimenopausal and I was assured that they would get better when I was postmenopausal. Not so much! Excedrin migraine and extra strength Excedrin are the same product -- read the label. They are useful, but only if taken early on. If you get this type of headache regularly, go to a neurologist and get some advice and medication. In the meantime, what I have found often works is a hot bath with an ice pack on my head, sitting in the dark. But in the long-term, my neurologist and I found better answers. What finally worked for me was two-fold. I was on a daily medication of 500 mg. depakote and 50 mg topamax. The doctor said this SHOULD NOT WORK -- cocktails like that don't usually for migraines. But the depakote alone was no longer working for me and I could not tolerate the topamax and it was not working. Turns out that cocktail worked JUST FINE for me, for about 1 year. Then, we discovered (by pure accident!!) that many, if not most, of my migraines were no longer coming from my hormones, as they had been before. It seems I had developed a severe reaction to sulfites and phosphates that I'd never had before or even known about! The surprise was WHERE I was getting them from -- the salad bars at restaurants, salads at fast food places, chicken -- both fresh (check the labels to be sure!!) and from fast food places, fresh pork (again, check the labels), balsamic vinegar, most salad dressings, etc. etc. Since we began scrupulously watching my diet, my migraines are down to about 1 every 6 weeks -- TOTALLY tolerable with Axert to knock it out!! One tablet does the job. It means a little extra work picking out food and watching what I eat when I go out, but it it SO worth it. Anyway, maybe this information may be of some help to you. I know that being on pills a lot is a trouble -- it was for me. But I found my answer, it seems. Hopefully, you will be able to find yours. Good luck!

What is the most important information I should know about divalproex sodium?
Do not use divalproex sodium to prevent migraine headaches if you are pregnant.
If you take divalproex sodium for seizures or manic episodes: Do not start or stop taking the medicine during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Divalproex sodium may cause harm to an unborn baby, but having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby.
You should not use divalproex sodium if you have liver disease, a urea cycle disorder, or a genetic disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome (especially in a child younger than 2 years old).
Divalproex sodium can cause liver failure that may be fatal, especially in children under age 2 and in people with liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial (MYE-toe-KON-dree-al) disorder.
Call your doctor at once if the person taking this medicine has signs of liver or pancreas problems, such as: loss of appetite, upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), ongoing nausea or vomiting, dark urine, swelling in the face, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Long ... BUT well worth the reading.
Make the connection!
I am a nurse with over 25 years experience in this area and I have seen a lot of people with various illnesses caused from chemicals and fragranced products as well as VOC’s in their homes, schools and workplace. This problem is growing as more and more chemicals are being introduced into the market and used on a daily basis.
We are now seeing more and more children and adults with Chronic Headaches, Migraines, Asthma, Allergies, Hives, Eczema, sinus / respiratory illnesses and Hormone related disorders. I can not emphasize how important it is to educate yourself about MCS (do a websearch for MCS) and the harm you may be doing to your health by using chemicals and fragranced products.
If you or a loved one suffers from Asthma, Allergies, Autism, chronic headaches, reproductive problems, Migraines, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus or Fibromyalgia, you need to read further and learn about the signs and symptoms of MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
Most doctors will not inform you about this because patients as a whole like to walk out of a doctors office with a prescription for some magical medicine and they do not want to be told that their expensive new perfume or newly installed carpet may be the culprit. So, the doctor will give you medications and many of these meds either do not work or cause other health problems.
Chemicals and fragranced products are often the root of all evil when it comes to your health. Many of the below mentioned items are common triggers to sinus, asthma, itching, headaches, Migraines and allergy problems amongst other health issues. Get rid of them and your lungs will thank you and you will breathe easier.
And, it is not only personal body or cleaning products causing havoc on your health….many people become ill after wearing brand new clothing, dry-cleaned clothes, installing new carpet, painting, buying a new mattress or after home renovations because of the Flame Retardants, Benzenes, Formaldehydes, etc. used in these products. So the answer is NO, you are not imagining that 2 weeks after your home, office or classroom got renovated you started to become ill, get dizzy or have headaches. This is happening more and more these days and adults as well as children are becoming sicker and sicker.
Unfortunately, too many doctors compound the problem by prescribing chemical medications to try to alleviate the symptoms of an already chemical overloaded body and they rarely tell the patient to eliminate the chemical offenders. How many times have I seen people in the grocery store with Bounce, Glade Plug-Ins and Febreeze in their shopping cart along with a bottle of Benadryl , Migraine Excedrin and a box of Allergy Tablets ? Why don’t they make the connection?
Here is a Brain Spect Scan Before and after a whiff of perfume: http://www.ourlittleplace.com/spect.html
Keep in mind that your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body. Then ... well... then it has to be filtered by your organs which are already working real hard.
BIG NO-NO’s
No Bounce or dryer sheets - these are VERY toxic
No Febreeze - your pets will even thank you for this
No Glade Plug-ins - VERY toxic
No scented candles
No Fragranced Products on Body, Hair or Clothing
No Smoke
No Dander
No Sprays
And remember, it is NOT the smell it is the Chemicals that make up the smell. So, even if something is "Fragrance Free" these products often mask the smell with another chemical ! There are plenty of safe healthy products out there that work well and do not have added chemical fragrances. Look on MCS sites if you need help finding them.
More and more workplaces & schools are creating “Fragrance Free Zones”… why do you think this is? Make the connection, your lungs and your health will thank you

It is commonly used for bipolar and epilepsy, but I believe it can be used for migraines... A lot of meds that work for those two disorders also work for preventing migraines. I get them from time to time and am very prone to headaches in general...when I was on Depakote (for BP) my headaches drastically reduced in frequency.

Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief. For cure you will have to follow acupuncture.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.
It may disappear naturally too.
