An HDTV will most definitely make the graphics look much better. But you need an HDMI cable to get the best out of your HDTV.

If you don't want a big TV, get a smaller TV at 720p resolution because it will be almost exactly the same as a big TV with 1080p resolution.

As for the position, it's really just a matter of opinion. I've seen infrared pictures of the PS3 in both positions and there really isn't a difference. As long as your PS3 is in a nice open space so it can get good circulation, it will be fine.

If you have a HDTV, HDMI is a digital signal, and supports infinite resolution. Instead of buying a $60 HDMI cable though, you might want to grab a component-video cable. PS3 and PS2 use the same video cables, so you can get a used PS2 "HD" cable for less than $10 at your local game shop.
Both types of connection will be on any HDTV made in the last two years.
PS3 supports a maximum output of 1080p (1,080 vertical lines in 16:9 ratio, 1080x1920 resolution.)
Both cables support this mode, and in a side-by-side test i ran when i bought my HDTV, i was surprised to see no noticable difference in picture quality.

HOWEVER, if you want to watch Blu-Ray movies, you will need a HDMI cable for HDCP - High Definition Content Protection - so that your PS3 knows that your screen isnt really a recording device for bootlegging Blu-Ray disks.

If you're just playing games, go for the cheap cable.
If you want to watch Blu-Ray's in full definition too, go for the HDMI.

Vertical is better if its in a closed cabinet or somewhere, probably more convenient for storage out of the way - horizontal is fine if theres ventilation... if its going to be inside a case of some kind, dont put it horizontal. If not it doesnt really matter.

dont get xbox elite with the aid of fact its no longer a genuine HD console. even with the actuality that it has a hdmi port, it does no longer demonstrate video games at 1080p, it UPSCALES it to 1080p. ps3 reflects activity as much as 1080p. so the ps3's video games could look greater suitable in 1080p. plus ps3 is greater sturdy. xbox 360: 33% hardware failure ps3: .2% hardware failure(see that decimal, decrease than a million%!!) edit: i forgot to show that elite helps HDMI a million.2 and ps3 helps HDMI a million.3 which provides out the main suitable image

You will definitely see a BIG difference. As to what position the PS3 should stand is up to you as long as you have enough ventilation. My PS3 stands horizontally.

yes it will look better and have a noticabe difference for sure, but don't forget to buy a good and expensive HDMI cable. With one of those combined with a nice 1080p, it will look amazing
