My boyfriend and I are moving into this cute e bedroom home we are renting for us and our children. I was wondering if it was ok to have a housewarming party. I'd love for our family to come and enjoy our own place. I don't wanna be rude but a few gifts like dish sets and stuff would be nice too. Is it ok?

Well actually my fiance and I thought about just getting married at City Hall, since a wedding is nowhere near affordable right now. So I thought it would be a housewarming/ we just got married thing

House warming parties do not attract house hold gifts of much value! Call it a Wedding reception-***-house warming party and you stand a chance to get some of the gifts you want!!!

In "The Wizard of Oz," the Wicked Witch of the East screeched, "These things must be done deh-lih-cate-leee!"

Moving into a rental is a good enough excuse for a party. Call it "house-warming" or whatever you want. However, if you drop hints that you'd like some dishes or other stuff, I might tell you that I'm busy. If I'm your dad and I know you have no lawn mower, then it's up to me how generous I will be.

If my price of admission is mild- the general "bottle of wine for dinner" or "flowers for the hostess" is in order, that's OK with me. People like to be generous with their friends, but no one likes to be seen as a walking gift card.

So- small gifts (wine, flowers, food) are common at a party. Wedding-reception gifts are another matter. So have your party, but don't be disappointed if people show up with a casserole instead of a set of dishes. It's about sharing something good with you (the housewarming) not a means to improve your lifestyle.

Housewarming parties used to be for inviting friends and family over to help warm up the new place. It was never used to get gifts.

I wouldn't go to a housewarming where gifts were suggested.

Usually in a housewarming is not like a wedding, you get small gift cards but not anything big. You can have a big moving party so everybody knows where you are living, but don't expect any big surprise.

I don't think it's too appropriate if it's rented.
