Did he survive death by going to heaven? Was he alive in heaven when Jesus was on earth? Was he alive in heaven after Jesus died and went to heaven? Is he in heaven today?
I am curious as to how many professed Bible believers actually know the answer to this question.

For those who think he went to heaven after Jesus resurrection, consider what Paul wrote concerning him over 30 years after Jesus death...
Hebrews 11:32-39 “For the time will fail me if I go on to relate about... David... and the [other] prophets...although they had witness borne to them through their faith, did not get the [fulfillment of the] promise."
How do you reconcile this with "All Good Dogs Go to Heaven?" Could there be a common belief about life after death that isn't quite in harmony with what the Bible really teaches?

Even King David did not ascend to the heavens. Acts 2:34, John 3:12, 13.
The first resurrection for the judges is at the second coming. John 14:3, 1 Cor. 15:23, Rev. 20:4-6. The rest of the dead live not until the thousand years (Judgment Day). Rev. 20:5, 2 Peter 3:7, 8.

According to Peter in Acts: 2:29-36..David did not go to Heaven..But he did not go to hell... I find this confusing.
29 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
31 "he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
34 "For David did not ascend into the heavens,
EDIT: After reading the other answers... I "see the light". "King David is asleep in his grave awaiting the resurrection of the righteous at the second coming of Christ"
Thank you....I learned something new this morning!

First I want you to know that I am Christian and have studied ancient scriptures for 60 years. God has not written any books...period! The first 5 books of the Christian bible are called the Torah and used by Jews exclusively. God did reveal information to Moses who recorded the information in the Torah. God does not create humans. God creates spirits and humans create humans with the exception of Adam (archangel Michael), Eve and his son Jesus Christ. Scriptorium's have the earliest recorded documents which are not available to the general public. You are struggling to mesh several ancient documents written by many men over hundreds of years (35 in the Old Testament of the bible and 27 in the New Testament. 2 women have books in the Old Testament). Here lies the main key.... the world "testament" is derived from the word testify as someone would do in a court of law. So the books in the Bible and Quran are a combination of books written by men and they are writing things they hear, see and feel. Men that followed Mohammad wrote things he said and done for several years. This happened around 500 years AFTER the death of Jesus Christ. Jesus was NOT muslim. Abraham had 2 sons.. Ishmael and Isaac. Ishmael had 12 sons and the lineage from them are the people in the Persian gulf region. Not all muslims are Islamic. Abraham's son Isaac had a son Jacob who had 12 sons and later God changed Jacobs name to Israel. One son was Judah bringing the lineage of the Jews. Both the virgin Mary and Joseph are from the house of King David which had no connection with the tribes of Ishmael's sons. God did not send Jesus as a prophet... Jesus was God's son who came to Earth to stop some of the covenants in the Old Testament and start new ones in the New Testament through his ministry. He chose 12 men to follow him in many capacities. There are ancient documentations of changes in the Quran (check on internet). Your number 6 I have addressed above and feel free to check every thing I have written. For the Quran to say that some people were innocent Muslims is part of what I'm trying to tell you that people have changed a lot of ancient documents depending on who is interpreting them, but just know that the Quran came 500 years AFTER the Bible.

It is my understanding that not too many people actually ascended into heaven before Christ came, died for us, and descended to hell to save the rightious. I personally haven't been bothered by this question because I don't need to know if David went to heaven to have faith in the Lord. But it truly is interesting to think about.

JESUS ASCENDED AND DAVID IS STILL DEAD IN HIS SEPULCHRE
If anyone could go to heaven before Jesus died, there would be no need for his death. He who is least in the kingdom, is greater than John who died before Pentecost. The heavenly are raised up at the last day John 6:39,40,44;
Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
2:28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

The Bible says that he was buried and his body decayed. He is now in Heaven with Jesus, although the Bible doesn't explicitly mention David by name as being there now, because David had faith in the Messiah to come and because the spirits of the Old Testament Saints rose from the dead after Jesus rose from the dead and while some of them witnessed to people in Jerusalem briefly they all ascended to be with the Lord in Heaven.
Matthew 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
