There is nothing of any value that is new from the Bible, so it's not a *source* of enlightenment.
It's definitely a tool of oppression. Read the filthy thing and you'll be surprised that anyone could possibly think it's inspired by an all-loving god.

It has elements of both. The way it's been used most lately has been as a tool of oppression. Not in the sense Da Ent Wife mentions, though, I mean in the sense of controlling groups of people through fear and guilt, and then cherry-picking verses to influence politics.

The Word of God is the Divine Expression of how God views us. It speaks of promises and curses. For those who want light . . it helps us see ourselves for who and what we really are. In terms of it being used as a tool. . . . Yes, it is a tool. God himself calls it a "Hammer" it's used to crush, break down & demolish. However, a "Hammer" is also used to build a new structure. It makes certain that the building will be able to stand in a time of storm. It's foundation is "Christ" and God Himself will build a temple upon Christ Jesus. Strong winds of tribulation and temptation will come, but if God built you. . you will remain.

In and of itself it simply is, it is in how people use that determines whether it is enlightening or oppressing

If you read the bible as an open minded and intelligent person it can give you great insight (like a lot of books). However if you use it as a guide to every aspect of your life it will lead you to confusion and bigotry.

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
Note that this is sharper than a twoedged sword. It can cut from either direction. It can heal or destroy. Its up to the reader.

If you look through evil eyes you will only see a tool used against you, if you look with needing or wanting eyes then you will see deliverance.
