You have to buy an add on called the 80GB PS3 which costs $499.. once you have it you can throw out your 40GB because the 80GB does all the same stuff and has backwards compatibility too..

Just kidding..

Actually it's pretty low of Sony for taking out a major feature which everyone KNOWS is a part of the PS3 from all the older advertisements and not really tell anyone about it.. there should have been a big sticker on the 40GB boxes to tell people that it won't play their PS2 games.. that way people could be sure they bought the right one..

I think a lot of people are going to have that pit in their stomach and be thinking 'ooh no.. I got the wrong one..'

Good luck..

Are you guys serious? Did you even read his question, he clearly understands that Sony is selling the system and hindering PS2 playback. It's only 2 sentences, c'mon, you can do it. ;)

In reply, I am thinking that something will get off the ground. I'm actually doing research right now on the same subject. I would think because you can load such a hefty operating system like Linux that emulation is possible. Even more obvious is the fact the 80 gig drive does PS2 playback with EMULATION! So maybe one day they'll figure out how to unlock that in the 40gig, or you could potentially download a software package off the web, or directly from Sony. I gaurantee you someone will figure out how to do it with the official emulation software very quickly.

Unfortunately, no. Other PS3 versions play PS2 games because they have some hardware from PS2 (some more, some less). 40GB doesn't have any PS2's hardware left.
