Can I extend my PS3s memory b putting in a memory card, or do I have to buy the 80 GB one(I have the 40)

The only way to make your PS3's memory larger is by buying a bigger internal hard drive.

PS3 games save directly to the hard drive and a memory card wouldn't work.

You can buy any Internal Sata 2.5" Laptop hard drive and it will work with the PS3. The largest hard drive that you can put in the PS3 is a 250GB Hard drive.

You can replace PS3's HDD. Any 2.5" 5400RPM SATA HDD (same used in many laptops) will do the job. Slightly faster 7200RPM work too, but Sony recommends 5400RPM ones.
