The Bible does say your body is a temple so you should be concerned with how you take care of it, but the Bible also says that the plants and animals are here for our use. I think that moderation is the key.
edit: I would disagree with my friend perfekshin. Alcohol kills more people than all other drugs combined, including tobacco.

Good question. And to see this answer better, allow me to take you to Rome, Italy. Has anyone ever been there? If you go to your favorite restaurante , on each table that someone is sitting at there will be a fresh carathe(spelling) of wine of your choice. For what we pay for a glass of ice water here in America, wine is more popular in most of those countries in that area. It is the drink of choice there. But the wine that is served with meals are much like our fruit juice drinks here, only they cost less than our water cost us here. And ice water in Italy costs what wine cost us here. All that to say that the wine of that time was more than likely just a drinking wine as to water your food down and nothing worth tring to get a buzz on. Not that there wasn't wine that had high octane available. It just wasn't a prevailant.
Anyone know how early "smoking" may have started? The earliest I can imagine would be at the tme of tobacco, and the native Indians had varieties of smoking habits. By the way Jesus even drank wine and I'm sure He's tell you now that if you were of a responsible age and you decided to drink wine with a meal or cocktail , HE wouldn't disagree...Just not to excessiveness that you begin to act out of character or a fool. Hope this answers some of your questions?

The Bible doesn't say anything about sinful consumption other than in gluttony (overeating) and drunkenness (too much alcohol). What makes smoking and etc. sinful along these lines is the fact that God said He would not "dwell in an unclean temple (person, since WE are the "temple" of God). Since science has proved the ill, virtually irreversible effects of cigarette smoking to be fatal, it only stands to reason that this is a defilement of our temple that God wouldn't favor. However, people can drink in moderation ONLY if they're not in mixed company with an alcoholic or someone who has made a vow NOT to consume alcohol (like Samson).....Drunkenness has it's obvious and often more immediate judgments (death in auto accidents or poisoning), but since wine is a symbol of purity from the Bible, the MODERATE consumption of it is held as a healthful remedy to certain ailments and must be held in that regard, lest one falls into alcoholism and etc.

Yes it is in the Bible what God considers clean food and unclean food. Not sure of what book it is in though. Drinking is indeed fine because it does not harm you if you drink itevery once in a while. Jesus even drunk wine at a wedding but He didn't make a habit of it where He became an alcoholic or it harms His body. Drinking is fine but when you drink frequently and excessively it can cause harm to you. Smoking is another story. no matter how much you smoke you are still damaging your liver, lungs ecetera, and it is unhealthy. Anything unhealthy to your body is unhealthy to God and your spiritual growth.

Drunkeness is a sin - not drinking alchohol, but if you're drinking of alchohol causes a brother or sister in Christ to stumble, then it's a sin to drink it.
Using mind altering drugs is a sin for the same reason that we shouldn't be drunken. When you are drunk or on drugs, you do not have control of your mind and body - and I would even argue that you can more readily hand that control off to satan in states of being hight or drunk.
Gluttony is a sin. Yes, it is wrong to eat foods that are harmful to your body. Your body is a temple, according to the Bible, if you are a born-again CHristian.

the bible says not to be drunk with wine, when you accept Christ then your body becomes a temple of the Lord and you are to take care of it, so yes over indulgence in food is also a sin because you are living for you, and not for the Lord. Anything you do to harm the body is not good. The bible also says to drink a little wine for our stomachs sake. I do not think it is the alcohol, I drink juice instead.

The Bible is emminently pragmatic on such subjects. The Psalmist thanked God 'for wine that makes the heart of mortal man rejoice' (Ps 104:15) but also warned of wine that causes confusion (Ps 60:3). Not a contradiction - just balanced comments. Likewise in the New Testament, Timothy was advised to 'take a little wine for your stomach's sake' but Christians are also warned never to get drunk.
With smoking and drugs, the principle is the same as with wine. All those things are addictive and any addiction erodes faith, giving place for the Devil. If we depend on a substance to meet a craving, we are not depending on God. Any God-given craving (for food, water, sex, companionship etc) can be supplied by God's own provisions for such things. He never intended us to crave nicotine or hallucinations! The Bible says that all that is not of faith is sin (Rom 14:23 in the context of eating and drinking). That is why even eating and drinking must be done to honor God, thanking him for his provisions and not becoming addicted to anything consumed. This is not legalism! There's no list of prohibitions! But mature Christians work out what is pleasing to God in every aspect of their lives; their conscience guides them.

I would think it has something to do with Comunion (this is total speculation, btw). Christians use wine to symbolize the blood of Christ, and therefore it can't be all bad. If the Bible were written so that smoke were his breath, I imagine smoking would be all right too, but it isn't.
I agree with the others, though: there are few religions that advocate the knowing harming of your own body, with the exception of martyrdom.

Anything that is hurtful to your body is wrong! The Bible states that wine is good for you when used in moderation. Smoking is in no way beneficial to your body!
If I understand you correctly, you are saying that if one thing is bad, all should be bad, is that right? I agree, smoking is not worse than eating bad foods or anything else that is unhealthy! Your body is the temple of the Lord and we are not to defile it!

Drugs & alcohol have the same effect. They may lower inhibitions and self control, resulting in a increased liklihood that you will do something stupid (been there, done that).
Most christians will not respond with a pragmatic answer because their belief just requires a blind adherence to the rules rather than an analytical questioning approach to all aspects of life
