I have a German shepard/golden retreiver/greyhoud mix that chases anything that runs. It has killed the neighbors duck and a stray cat. He seems to think that anything that runs wants to play. Unfortunatley he is bigger than most things and ends up killing them. Help please.

He has high prey instinct. Dogs are born with certain traits just like people are. Some of those drives (traits) are defense drive, prey drive, pack drive. Your dog is exhibiting a strong prey drive. You can't change that, but you can help to redirect it into appropriate venues. Perhaps you could find games that he could play for this or even take him hunting. You just cannot change how he was born, so you will have to contain him and redirect that drive into an acceptable behavior.

I think that I would take the dog on a fairly long leash and get it aroung things that run. The next part might sound cruel - but it is intended to stop this behavior.
When the dog tries to break into a run - pull back really, really hard on the leash and sternly give the command LEAVE IT!!
Everytime the dog tries to run after something - then pull the dog hard and tell the dog LEAVE IT.
When the dog responds to you - praise it
Hopefully this will help to get the dogs attention and make the dog realize that it will not be fun to run after something.

Keep him on a leash.
UPDATE: Sorry my answer sounds so short. What I meant is, it is in their instinct to chase and its very hard to change what they do by instinct. All those three breeds are ones who do chase, and run fast. There are a few things you can do but I don't know if they would be 100 % reliable. Here is a web site that has some good ideas. (Warning its long and the typing is small).

Good luck.

Its part of the greyhound instinct to do that but try taking him to some training courses they really help. Teach yoru dog to stay and practice in 10 different places throwing balls and toys as distractions and reward for good behaviour.
