I have Sharp Aquos LC 60C46U and Philips DVD player DVP 5982. I connected them with HDMI cable but there is neither picture nor sound. How do I find out what is wrong? Does the tv or the player have a bad port? How do I find the problems?

Since you don't have an HDMI analyzer, there are 3 options of failure: cable (or bad connections). player, or TV.

a) Are your connections tight? Did you try a second cable?
Do these cables work in another setup?
b) Does your DVD player work with another TV? Yes - TV or cable problem. NO? Could be player problem.
c) Does the TV's HDMI port work with another source?
Did you try another port?

HD-DVD Player is obviously a Hi-Def player that gives you 1080 output most likely through the HDMI connector output. The HD-DVD Format is backed by Toshiba. An HDMI DVD player is simply a DVD player that has an HDMI output (traditional DVD Players offer component video output at best). It may upconvert to 1080, but it will not be true Hi-Def from a standard DVD disc.
