People make their own dogs fearful. When you approach new situations or different people, you should be confident, not nervous and you should show your dog that there is nothing to be afraid of. If you are nervous or apprehensive, then he will be to. He just doesn't know why you are feeling nervous, but he figures he should be to. So you should act the way you want your dog to act to new situations and new people.

A dog feels most secure when he has a routine. They like things to be predictable. So as much as possible carry out the same routine with him every day. For instance, feed at the same times, feed the same food. Walk him on familiar paths. Walk close to the same time every day. You get the picture. They also like structure as far as obedience. Teaching commands like sit, stay etc. makes him feel secure because he feels that he knows what is expected of him. Obedience class really helped my dog to be more relaxed meeting people and dogs. Another thing that helped a lot with mine is every time we went out I had a pocket of dog treats. Whenever I met someone who was willing I would give them a treat to give him. When I got him he used to shake and show his teeth when he met someone. Now he is just the opposite, he likes everyone.

When my pup was scared of certain things, our trainer told us to feed him his favourite treat. (not while he's being scared ofcourse, thats rewarding the unwanted behaviour) You feed him treats keeping him distracted and lead him into what he's scared of. If you forget and just happen to walk into the 'scarey item' and the puppy reacts wtih fright just walk straight back, no comforting talk, praise or scolding just walk back like it didn't happen. And try again wtih the treats from when the puppy is confident and leading it straight up to the object or person.

NEVER force the dog into an object its scared of, it won't work,

good luck:)

I'm going to go all Dog-whisperer on you::
He's nervous because you are. Be confident and cool when he's meeting new people. You are afraid he's going to be nervous, so your fear transfers to him.
Watch the show-- there's a lot of situations like yours. it's on the National Geographic channel

just give him all the love and attention that you can. And take him places with you and meet other people. It will help the more people he is around the more secure he will be.
