Fundies meaning those who are Bible literalists. Catholics being Catholic of course. You can answer for both this forum and for your experience in the world.

(In case you are wondering, I am neither.)

No Lucid, I don't think the "fundies" would let you in their ranks. They don't want me either, sorry. =]

I think it's hard to know because people aren't always direct about who they disdain.

But one thing is obvious to me: disdain for Catholicism is on the decline, while disdain for fundamentalism is on the rise.

The hotbeds of anti-Catholicism were: (1) Ireland/England conflict; (2) the American south. Today there is peace in Ireland and the entire UK is steering toward secularism as a state ethic. In the American south, conservative Protestants and Catholics seem to have a lot of common ground on things like abortion.

But disdain for fundamentalism comes not only from irreligious people, but from liberal religious people. And they took a big hit in 2004, but in general the influence of fundies has been increasing. So the disdain for fundamentalism is mostly a reflex to the religious right.

Ive been both a Catholic and a born again Christian. I believe that Born again Christians are disliked by the secular world far more than the Catholics. When I was a Catholic, I didnt really follow Catholicism, so at least for me I received much less heat then than as I do now as a Christian.

BTW: I always get confused about the term fundie. I am born again...pro gay marriage, prolife, anti death penalty and believe the bible to be infallible word of God. Does this make me a fundie? lol

Gods peace :)

I'm not an atheist. I am Wiccan. My vexation with fundies and their attack on Harry Potter is their deep seated belief that I actually believe in that crap. While it is a great story, good special effects, etc, my issue is that any self respecting witch doesn't think they can open a lock by waving a wand, grow gills by eating seaweed, or fly with the right broom. If a fundie, or anyone else, wants to take issue with Harry Potter based on the fact that it is a fiction book that they don't approve of, fine. But stop pointing at it and saying "See, and this is why witchcraft is bad and evil". Get a life people.

With me it's the fundie's hands-down. They are so full of judgment, condemnation, intolerance, and conceit. In addition, they are so stuck in their own dogma, you couldn't pry their minds open to insert a new or different idea with the "Jaws of Life".

On the other hand, most of the Catholics I've dealt with here are pleasant and tolerant.

Yeah, the fundie's win the badge by a long shot.

Fundies. Mostly because catholics tend to mind their own business but fundies attack catholics far more often, and for the craziest reasons, the lamest of which is that they're not true "Christians". Catholics are universally considered Christians except by some fundies.

It depends on who you are referencing.

If it is the general population then I would say fundies. Catholics believe that God decides who goes to heaven and therefore do not rule whether they do or anyone else.

Fundies believe they are going to heaven and no one else is.

Fundies are not hated by Catholics but Fundies do tend to hate everyone, including catholics.

Catholics and fundies are on completely different ends of the spectrum. Fundies are disliked more because they attack everyone - atheists, other religions, and Catholics.

Catholics seem to be a more modern sect of Christiantiy who keep to themselves more.
