Three way switches for AC power are special switches. You have to buy two three way switches, and wire them as shown on the packaging. You can't just buy regular switches and wire them to be three-way.

There are many web sites that show how to do this. One of them is linked below.

A three-way switch is a single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) switch. That means it has a single input wire that it will connect to one of two outputs. They are used in pairs to enable you to control a light or other device from two different places. A basic circuit is source - switch 1 - switch 2 - light - neutral. There are two wires between switch 1 and switch 2, so when both switches are in the same position, either up or down, the light is on. You can also wire it up with the light before or between the switches. This - http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=Improve/threewayswtch.html - is how it's done in house wiring; in a battery-powered circuit you probably won't be bothering with a separate ground. A single three-way switch can also be used to select one of two circuits. Since you don't generally have circuits where you want something to be on all the time, this is not often done, but you see it occasionally where either the main light or a night-light is always on.
