Getting to sleep is easier when your body is comfortable --
a little something in your stomach, loose clothing, soft clean bedding, warm / cool enough, quiet or very light constant sound to block out loud sounds (you can't control like sirens). Feeling secure and safe in your surroundings. Calm thoughts and emotions. Physically quiet and still. Knowing no children or pets are wandering around in the house.
On your way to bed, get a sip of water, use the bathroom, and turn off the lights - unless you leave on a single light. For the hour before heading to bed engage your mind in quiet thought and very little moving around. (Do your exercising at an earlier time in the day.) Keep the noise level low. Reading quietly is one of the best bedtime rituals, or writing. As your mind begins to slow, pull up the covers and turn off the lights. Move into a comfortable position and allow your thoughts to drift to calm subjects. Within 10 minutes you should be asleep.
If your emotions or body are active it may be difficult to get to sleep.

Well, one really simple way is to get really tired before you go bed. If that means staying up past your normal bedtime, so be it!
You can speed up the tiring-yourself-out process by exercising and/or working especially hard during the day.

self- hypnosis.
or repeating something like a poem or a song or a prayer over and over and starting from the beginning everytime you mess up helps.

lay on your back. put your hands on your tummy and close your eyes. then, try your best to clear your mind! take extra, extra, EXTRA deep breaths. When your breathing in, try to make it seem as though your trying to make your belly button touch the ceiling.
it makes me fall asleep fast :)
