This is from the D300 at ISO 6400. It is cropped, but otherwise untouched in any way. Note that it is at 1/125 sec. with a minor bit of fill flash.

JL - you always have to ask, "Compared to what?" It's 1 AM and I could take my camera outside now and hand-hold it and it would look almost like daylight. In fact, I think I'll do that!

Toni, ISO _IS_ exactly like gain because that's what it is! I tried talking about that 2 weeks ago (maybe more) and it was decided that it would only confuse the issue to view it this way.

All I can say is that this is an EXTREME example. One day, I will find a real use for ISO 6400, but this was just something I thought about at one o'clock in the morning. Personally, I doubt I would ever have a serious use for this kind of speed.
I challenge ANYONE to take a HAND-HELD shot of the moon with a D2Hs. DO it tonight. Post a comment under my image so I will know you have done it. That's hand held...
I can't wait to go back to those sycamore trees and try them without a tripod.

Hey, I'd like to see this much detail with film, too - hand-held.

You know what, I need to apologize and perhaps rephrase my remarks. I did not invent this camera, so I have no emotional stake in it. I don't need to defend Nikon's honor or sound like I am challenging anyone's point of view. Film is great. The D2Hs is great. Each is great for what it does.
I would NOT choose to take a hand-held picture of the moon for any worthwhile purpose and nobody else would, either. Why would I use a D300 for dark photos when I could do so much better with infrared or some crazy kind o fspy camera? I am only posting some images here for those who are curious about the capabilities of a fine camera that I am fortunate enough to own. There is always a lot of speculation when something like this comes out and I am just trying to provide some "enrichment material."

I have to put the post up in the form of a question or - believe it or not - someone will report me for not posting a question and this information would be deleted. It's happened in the past and I would like to play just far enough inside the rules that it doesn't happen again. The way I see it is that we are here to HELP EACH OTHER and not tear each other down. I mean, why bother with that? It wouldn't help me to hurt you or anyone else. Please don't think that I am attacking you (any one of you) or your camera. Please don't think that I am trying to show some kind of personal superiority or anything, either. I'm just trying to share some new information and I got a little emotional about it.
