Salt, as a dietary mineral is essential to human and animal life. There are 35 references to salt in the King James Version of the Holy Bible. Lots wife was turned into a pillar of salt, when she disobediently looked back to the sinful city of Sodom. King Abimelech destroyed the city of Shechem, when he sowed salt on it.
Salt is used in at least two phases of the Catholic church rituals. Salt is used for ritual purification of Japanese Sumo wrestlers.
Being as plentiful as it is and as inexpensive as it is, makes it a very acceptable medium for practices by cult groups or other semi-spiritual groups. As for it washing away evil spirits, whether it does or does not, it certainly would not be a great waste if used for this purpose. I personally prefer salt on my food and prayer for spiritual matters. And I might add, that I have had great results.
