The article linked above mentions that there are health benefits to be had from a monthly fast. The article also points out that Mormons fast every month, and this caused me to wonder... Do any other religions teach their followers to fast regularly, and if so, which ones?

There are fasts and there are fasts. Many "fasts" are dawn to dusk fasts, such as the Muslim month of Ramadam. In Judiasm, there are two strict fast days each year, the Day of Atonement, and the 9th Day of the month of Ab (when many disasters befell the Jews, including the destruction of the temple), and several half-days of fasts. Most Reform Jews ignore the half-days.

Fasting is a way of demonstrating our intense need for God's help.
Fasting should not be done to impress other people
Fasting can involve a simple diet.

its mentioned in the bible, one can do it on their own. I'm christian and i fast to remind myself that i need God's help and without him i'd be nothing.

but i think its probably practiced and encouraged mostly in islam during ramazan because it means they have self control and self restraint.

the Bible talks of fasting.... it is a self sacrifice, for lack of better term, and enables us to concentrate on God.... I fast but seldom.... I am of the belief it should be done with the right spirit, mind and heart set.... there is no *rule* about fasting..... go in peace.... God bless

Islam does, as well as Hinduism.

Ramadan is time of fasting for Muslims that only allows them to eat at night.

Never came across it in the Baptist faith but that would mean giving up cornbread, ham hocks, pineapple sauce, biscuits, gravy and other goodies.
