do you have to use a router to connect and play online? If you don't have to, how do you without one?

You can use a wireless (Wi-Fi) or a wired connection (ethernet cable) from your computer to the PS3 console. Here are the instruction to connect a ethernet cable to your PS3.

You have to have an internet connection (or wireless access to someone else's internet connection)

That's all. A ps3 connects to the internet the same as a computer does, either directly or through a router or hub, or wirelessly. If you're sneaky you can hitchhike wirelessly on your dumb neighbor's router, just like with a PC too;) but you wouldn't get very good bandwidth :(

For wired access the ps3 uses ethernet cables, just as pc's do.
