I would like to answer this question, but it is vague. Are you refering to a specif situation?
Personally I always tell the truth. Sometimes it gets me in trouble. If you can't tell the truth about something for some reason, then you should avoid the subject entirely.

I do my best to be truthful and straightforward in my dealings with others. However, no matter how bad her haircut, I'm telling my best friend it looks great. Call me a liar.
