I have several friends who completed a Basic Dental Assisting program at a tech school & it only took them 1 quarter (3 months). One of them is currently trying to get a job at an orthodontist's office & they send their assistants to a week-long course to teach them the specifics of ortho. assisting. Maybe your mom could see if an orthodontist will hire her & then send her for training.
