A few issues here...
First, Peace Corps people deploy all the time, sometimes to very unsafe places. They serve our country as well.
Can't believe the Navy is getting no love here. Please remember that the Navy deploys almost all sailors all the time. It is called "sea duty". Doesn't matter if we are at war or not, sailors stand the watch. Oh, sure, during "shore duty" things can be safe...but that lasts like two years and then you are off again. I worked on subs and those things are not fun (but sometimes are a blast). But the submariners are damned good folk.
Finally, remember the Navy does have dedicated ground troops. Not counting special forces, the Seabees are all over the world, the corpsmen serve all Marines wherever they go, and Masters at Arms guard our most precious resources at ports everywhere.

You did not mention if you are male or female. If you are female go with the Air Force unless you have big hips and a big butt then go with the Navy. The Navy travels a lot but, you will be on a ship. Another poster mentioned the differences with flying planes in both branches. They were dead on. For example if you want to work on planes the Air Force will teach you only one part of the plane. However, the Navy will teach you the entire plane. The Navy is better for teaching you more about a job. If you want a normal way of life that is the most similar to the civilian way of life then choose the Air Force. Since you really want to travel the Navy would be the way to go except you will be on a ship. Even though you are stuck on a ship Navy guys know how to have a damn good time no matter where they are. (personal experience) Don't expect to do much traveling in the Air Force unless you deploy. When you deploy you are not going to travel anywhere you want to go to. That is nice that you want to make a difference. However, nothing you do in the military will make you feel like you are changing the world. That making a difference and serving your country talk is just all a fantasy. It is not going to be anything like the movies. Don't think you are going to go into the military and be a pilot either even if your brother did it. We all want to be pilots just like top gun but, it doesn't happen. Especially if you are not an officer. You need to be realistic and not expect much particularly when it comes to excitement and making a difference.

If you don't want to ever deploy, then join the peace corps. The military deploys. That is what its main purpose is, and it will always deploy. But, if you are looking for a safer branch... then I would say join the Navy. The Air Force does deploy to hot zones just as much as any other branch, just for smaller amounts of time. While there aren't that many Navy people on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of the Navy I have seen in Iraq were customs officials, but some of them work in a joint environment with the Air Force. Then, yes (because somebody is bound to say it), there are Navy SeALs on the ground in Iraq. But SeALs account for less than 0.3 percent of the Navy (that is an estimate).
But, for safety, choose Navy, they stay on ships off the coast.

As stated in this thread, if you are concerned about being deployed to a war zone by either the Navy or Air Force then I will tell you that you need to look into the civilian job market. Both services deploy to the Middle East. If you want to remain SAFE, then check a company within the States. I'm sure (if you ask around) no one wants someone around who is supposed to be watching your back, running for cover when the going gets tough

No service is neccessarily safe. Also, you must take into account the specific job you choose or is chosen for you.
US Casualties
To date:
AF: 42
Air Guard: 2
Army: 2230
Army Guard: 430
Army Reserve: 129
Coast Guard: 1
DoD: 1
Dept. of AF: 2
Marines: 844
Marine (IRR): 1
Marine Reserve: 127
Naval Reserve: 14
Navy: 73
http://icasualties.org/oif/Service.aspx
If you are willing to do your homework, go to the reference site provided, and search specific jobs within each service. For example: My career field has lost 6 service members. However, we are the largest career field in the AF with over 23K active duty, and over 30K when you add in reservist. So, statistically speaking, we are actually one of the safer jobs in the AF at present. Of course that is not taking into account injuries from IED's etc.
Anyway, thats the long answer. The short answer is, if you are not fully prepared to pick up your M4 carbine, and get on a plane today, then we really don't need you. You could do an entire enlistment, and never spend a day in the sand. Realistically, expect to be over there soon after completing your training. And thats coming from an AF enlisted member.

If you don't want to go then don't join the military.
Navy personnel is there in many different ways, SeaBees, SEALs, Corpman, Supply, Personnel, etc... Lots of Sailors have been taken from their jobs and placed as an Individual Augmentee in Iraq & Afghanistan, from various positions. Even some from submarines, overseas commands, wherever they are needed from they are taken. Some volunteer but many do not. If they are not there on the ground then they will be there in the ships they are stationed on in the Gulf.
So it doesn't matter which branch you enter, you will go wherever they need you.

Navy is the way to go. My boyfriend is in the Navy and they get amazing benefits and amazing pay. He works a nice office job on the base and doesn't have to be out on a ship or anything! He just does a bunch of paper work and approves peoples vacation time and stuff. It's like a regular 9-5 job, the Navy pays for him to live out in town in an apartment, and you don't have to go to places like Iraq, or Afghanistan. They have 2 large bases out of San Diego and Norfolk, Virginia, so you could even have a good chance of staying in the US.

Again, all personnel are deployable. AF deploys as much as everyone else (don't know about the Navy). My husband has been deployed 7 times, almost blown up by several mortors, shot at in his airplane, firestorm while he was in a helicopter and more he won't even tell me about. And he's only a Crew Chief.
NO BRANCH IS SAFE.
Stay at home at work at McDonald's if you want safe. The military is not for cowards.

If you must enlist and are afraid of anything then join the Air Force.
I never saw a fly-boy in the jungle humping and thumping, but did see their fancy barracks and commissary once in Danang, would you believe they even had massage parlors!!!
I did see the Navy right next to us humping and patching, they were called "Doc" and all Navy Corpsmen.
So the obvious answer is Air Force.

The only environment more hazardous to work in than mine is space. I have over 1,000,000 pounds of sea water trying to kill me 24/7 at sea.
If you go into the military whether USN, or USAF, count on going to Iraq, Afghanistan ,or the HOA. The Navy sends allot of its people their on IA. I know three in my small command (130) that will be in CENTCOM by March.
