It doesn't play ps2 games because it's not built for it. That's the one of the upgrades the 80gig has. It has a lot of options. Return the 40g, and get the 80.

The 20,60,80 gb ps3's are compatible with ps2 games. The 20 and 60 more so because of the hardware compatibility but they were discontinued about a year ago so most of the 20,60s out there are used and refurbished however the 80gb uses software compatibility so it plays about 80% of ps2 games and they were just recently discontinued but you can still find them in stores till those dry up. The 40 GB IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE WARNING.oh and the 20gb doesn't have wifi. personally I'd go ahead and get an 80gb before they dry up!

Because you didn't buy a ps3 earlier when the 20gb and 60gb models were made with the ps2 CPU inside, (and because a lot of other people didn't, too) and so Sony had to cut corners to make up for losses and match Microsoft's prices.

About some of the other answers here, the software emulation for 80gb is good, and it may come to the 40gb eventually as well, but on my 60gb it is PERFECT - and for ps2 games that can ouput in progressive scan, it makes them look better than they ever did on a ps2. If you can find one for under $400, maybe you should sell your 40 and get a 60.

because it doesent have the hardware built-in to do so.

there will never be an update , like the guy upthere said.
so don't wait, return your 40 gb, and pay 100$ more to get the 80gb.

$100 more isnt so much, cause the 80gb comes with motorstorm which is worth around $50, and the 40gb comes with spiderman 3 which is only worth about $30

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

it doesnt have the tech to do so. all others 20, 60 and 80 gb were built with the tech and hardware to play ps2 games but to reduce the 40's price further they built it without wireless internet capabilities (thats right you cant use this with a wireless router) and smaller HDD, and without the ability to play older games. As many others before me have stated, lose this and get another.

if u only want to play ps2 games u may consider just keeping your old ps2, but if you want the wifi capabilities you need 60 or 80.

simple answer because its not backwards compatible, they cut several items down to make it besically cheaper, unlike the 60gb ps3 which does play some ps2 games.

Or you can get a 60gb if available it's backwards compatible as well. This article states that the 80gb software emulator does a better job than the hardware on the 60gb though.
