Everyone is different- it depends on your threshold for pain. Some take it better than others & it also, depends on the person doing the tatoo. No doubt about it there will be some pain & anything done close to the bone (shoulderblade) for instance will hurt more than other areas. It is not unbearable though unless you have a very low tolerance for pain. Also, after awhile the area becomes numb & you don't feel it as much. The hard part is when the tatooer first starts because you don't know whats coming. Good luck-you will be fine I'm sure!

Take a deep breath, it will be ok. I was going to get something going all the way across my back, tho i changed my mind and got something on the left (upper) side and am planning to get something else on my right.
i took some friends so i could have someone with me and plus to surprize them lol. I was very scared but it was fine. to be honest it really felt like someone was pinching my back (in a playful/hurting way, not a oh my gosh painful way) so it felt like pinching but i couldnt move (r he guy might mess up).
to my surprise it was over faster than i thought. when he got closer to my center of my back the pinching was wrose, BUT that was at the end so i was almost done and it was fine. think about it this way, when they start on your back they will most likely go to it lefty to righty meaning that when it starts it will hurt, get wrose at the middle when you are used to the pinching, and then ease off by the time the right side comes. so if they do it that way you numb into the middle and be very numb to the any pain by the right side.
now if it wasnt on my back & was somewhere i could see the guy doing it i might have freaked seeing it, but on my back, it was behide me.
I was very scared on needles, and i have an OCD to being poked by even fingers, but since my tattoo, i have gotten shots and blood taken and felt fine. NOW i am not saying the shots and tats are alike! Tattoos only go in a small amount, but if i could get poked a zillion times then a few shots were nothing. i was such a scary cat before, and now i feel a bit bad a$$ed. I am a complete nerd and a tat built confidence.
dont worry, expect it to hurt, and then it wont be so bad.

i think it feels like heat...just a lot of heat. i have 29 tattoos, and i really enjoy getting tattooed. i hate shots and having blood drawn, but this is a completely different feeling. i have many pieces on my back, and as long as you can sit still for a long period of time, its my favorite place to get tattooed. make sure you get a GREAT artist, because they make all the difference. you can ask the artist to take breaks whenever you need to, but it does hurt a little more when you break often, because your going over skin thats starting to heal. make sure to follow all the aftercare instructions the artist gives you, and dont listen to all the "tattoo experts" you will run into. no drugs or booze prior to your session, either, as they make you bleed heavier and can cause you to be more irritable when the pain starts. all in all, its great, and very worthwhile, but make sure the design is something you can live with forever, because from what i understand removal is a million times worse than actually getting the piece. good luck!

I think upper back is more tolerable than the lower back. Just make sure you've thought it through and wanted it for a long time. Tattoos are going to be there for your life. DO NOT PUT ANYONE'S NAME ON YOURSELF...Bad news. Use symbols instead if it's related to someone.

The shoulder blades will hurt like hell, unless you are "fleshy"
To me tatooing feels like allowing someone to drag a slightly dull razor across your skin, and some places it feels like its cutting deep, and some areas feel like its barely on your skin.Unbearable? not really, but not pleasant either.

Make sure you do ALL the after care stuff, because getting it is only the beginning. Good luck!

It hurts and as long as you get it in a spot where you can hide it, tattoos are not a bad idea. Some people on here just need to stop being so uptight and release some tension for their ***.

Pain thresholds vary from person to person. I have a couple tattoos and it is true that it can be anywhere from uncomfortable to painful when they tattoo over a bony prominence like your shoulder blades. As far as what to get, that is your decision.

Upper back does not feel too bad (in my case). My fiance's did not either. I have seen lot's of people cry like babies over the lower back though. I also got my ribs done. That wasnt the best feeling, far from intolerable though.

it hurts like hell trust me. i did the lower back and it hurts so bad that it aint even funny. also i would make sure that i put it some where i could cover it up if there was ever a need in which you need to cover it up also make sure that the person that does it knows what he/she is doing and that the place is clean and every item they use on you is in a sealed package

The pain is tolerable, otherwise no one would have tattoos! It can be pretty bad, though, especially in places without a lot of fat (like your back), but it's bearable.
