In response to "rndyh77" above,
The ancient Israelites didn't customarily drink grape juice because they didn't have refrigeration back then, or any other way to properly store fruit juice to keep it from going bad other than by fermenting it into wine. When it says that Jesus made wine, it is referring to *real* wine, not fresh grape juice! Nowadays, grape juice can be pasteurized and preserved with chemicals and stored in a bottle at room temperature, but they didn't do that back then so juice would lose it's freshness within mere hours of being pressed. However, both the Jews and Romans had a custom of mixing a lot of water with their wine so getting drunk on it was not that easy.

Honestly, I don't think the number of people who attended the wedding is what the purpose of the story is about. The point of the story is that Christ turned water into wine. What is even more significant is that Christ is thanked for saving the "good" wine for last.

The Greek word for wine is Oinos. The same word is used for unfermented grape juice. When Christ is thanked for saving the "good" wine for last, it seems likely that the person thanking him meant that he saved the unfermented or "good" wine for last. It also makes sense that Christ would not have offered anyone something that wasn't fresh and one could argue that this is a similitude for us to follow His example and refrain from alcohol.

The traditional wedding (like the one we will have) lasted for seven days (ours will last for seven years) and a lot of people came (as it will when we have our wedding feast).
