It's hard to tell without a biopsy and I'm no doctor but it sounds like something she needs to get looked at NOW. I had a breast lump and they said if it was hard and painfull, they would be worried because that's usually how cancer acts. I got my lump removed and everything is fine, no cancer, but your relative needs to go to the doctor asap. Cancer is not something you want to play around with for very long. It could spread and then....well just get it checked as soon as possible. Next week maybe? Make an appointment, don't gamble. My mom died of cancer when she was 42 and I was 15. Don't let that happen.

Yes there is a piece of cartiledge there. It is normal and everybody has it, but in some people it is slightly curved outward. It is called the xiphoid process. See wikipedia under xiphoid process for a clear description and a photo of what it is. It is completely normal... NOT TO WORRY I tried to give you a link to the wiki page but it kept giving me some Yahoo error

I had a boss who had one that sounds just like the one you're describing. His was under the last rib. He had it removed and it was a benign tumor (just a fatty mass). My husband had a huge one removed from his hip area. A doctor needs to check it of course to diagnose it, so they need to get in as soon as possible. Best of luck to them.

Go see doctor, today, now.
Nodes develop to block body disease and cancer.
The fact that it is painful is enough of a red flag to rush to the doctor right now. Go. Don't waste a moment. Node is too close to the heart and cancer spreads like wild fire.
