How do you kill the big boss hydra in God of War 1PS2?

I read one of the previous answers to this question but it did not work. I hit circle on the PS2 controller like it say's to grab its head. I keep pushing circle, but all that happens is I get flung into the pole. What do I do?

getting there:

What you have to do is get both the hydras on the side to stay down, cause they jump up too soon for you to climb up and kill the boss hydra, right?

What you have to do is, once you knock down the a little hydra, go jumping/climbing up the wall of boxes and at the top you will see a kind of harpoon apparatus, hit use on that and it will drop and nail the hydra's head permanently to the deck of the ship. You've got to be quick of course to nail the hydra before it gets back up.

Then go to the other side and nail the other one's head down.

Killing it:

Stay in block stance. Pay attention to the way it moves after its roars, there's big roars and little roars. Jump in and strike after the little roars, then go back into block. Wear it down little by little until it finally goes out of it and you'll have a little cut-game where Kratos wraps the rope around its head and you have to hit the circle button. This won't kill it, but it cracks the mast a little. Fight the thing all over again, go through the cut-game repeatedly and you'll crack the mast to the point where it breaks off. Then the next cut-game will have you impaling its neck on the broken-off mast

Wait, I just read the main body of your question...

You've got to hit circle QUICKly and repeatedly, it's best not to use your thumb. I always put the controller down and jab the circle button with my index finger.

Also, this cut-game makes it look like you've failed, but what you've really done is use the rope and the hydra's head to crack the mast a bit. Keep cracking it, more and more, and it will break.

to kill the hydra u must slash the hydra quickly, run out of his attack range, wait for him to attack, then countiously slash him RIGHT after. The key to doing this is to have agility and patience. Trust me i have beat the game twice. once on god mode!
