Verbal communication usually means spoken or in some cases signed, as in American Sign Language (ASL), words. Non verbal communication means facial expresions, body movement (i.e., shoulder shrugs, slight shudder in the body (at the sight of something disgusting)), diversion of eye sight (example: flirting, staring, looking away when looked at or burying of one's head in a book), any thing other than actually uttering words through one's mouth.

When you interact with someone you hear what they say and you watch their body language.

A person that's angry will yell, swear and chew you out. At the same time they get red in the face, move towards you, ball their fists and seem to be ready to hit you. The first part is verbal communication, the second non-verbal.

It gets confusing when the two communications don't match. I once asked a boss about doing something. He smiled (positive non-verbal communication) then said "I don't want to know about it. (negative verbal communication) I took it that he approved but, as it broke the rules, he couldn't give permission.

You see it at the checkout line. The kids want candy and Mom is saying "No." The kids keep it up and Mom keeps saying "No." Finally the kids get the candy. Did they really listen to Mom's words or were they reading her non-verbal language?

Verbal and non verbal are all types of communication. But the difference between them is that we use our voice in expressing verbal communication and we use body signs in expressing non verbal communication.
