Any of the more protective breeds. Rots, Dobermans, boxers, pitbulls, german shepards or a mutt of those breeds. We have also had very protective siberian Huskies.
However, not all dog of those breeds are very protective.

Our pitbull/german shepard/husky mutt barks at strange cars or people coming up the driveway to warn us, but then runs up wagging his tail when they get to the house. I am happy with just the warning.

An alarm/camera system would work out just fine, if not better than a dog.
But guardian dogs need intensive training. Are you looking for a dog that will give out a warning bark, or attack on sighting? This is exactly why police dogs have classes before they're put out on the field.
If you're willing to train them the right way, I would suggest Dobermanns, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Poodles [Seriously. They're good guard dogs], or Giant Schnauzers. Keep note, the Giant Schnauzers can be extremely agressive if not bred properly and not handled wth a firm, leading hand. They're known to be better guard dogs than German Shepherds, and also included in police work.
Bark only dogs can be German Shepherds, Poodles, Boxers, or Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls need work though, but they are not bad dogs.
I would still recommend an alarm protective system, but if you're that worried about your home and it's items [and are willing to care for the animal], get a dog.

Edit: What's with the thumbsdown? :| I told 'em they'd need to care for dogs.

Don't buy a dog just for home protection, I don't care what anybody tells ya is the breed, if you buy one already grown and mean, you are in for alot of heartache, these dogs will only cost you money in lawsuits, when they attack or even just bite someone.

get a dog for a companion, and they will love you to death, and will bark when someone comes around, but don't get a big dog to just make it mean to protect you, it is not fair the dog......

good breeds to own and are good normal watch dogs are

Golden Retrievers
Doberman, but don't provoke to become mean
German Shepherd, same thing don't provoke to be mean
Bull Mastiff
Miniature Schnauzer
Standard Schnauzer
Newfoundland
Labrador

see you can get any number of dogs, all dogs are great dogs, till someone mistrains or mistreats them..

research which breed fits your lifestyle before deciding on which one you want.

good luck

Any dog who is bonded to the family is a good protector. Chihuahuas are known to be fierce biters! But if you get a dog just for protection and not as a family member, he's an unguided missile. He might chew up a burglar, and he might chew up your neighbor's child.
Don't expect that a creature as needy of affection as a dog can become a robot. Try ADT or Sonitrol instead.

A good alarm system with a good video set up.
Dogs don't protect the stuff in your home, dogs alert you to a problem, or danger. But it is up to you to take care of dog and home. Stuff can be replaced, lives can't.

any dog that barks at noises and strangers

doesn't have to be a 'mean' dog, most burglars won't go into a house that has a barking dog

even a yappy dog would work

alarm systems are very pricey, dog is a great alternative and will be your best friend

I do have an answer for this question, although if, i could desire to declare that i do no longer think in applying an animal to guard my property. I own canines that are knowledgeable to guard me, yet I truthfully have an alarm and property proprietors coverage to guard any property that i'm no longer homestead to guard for my area. One kind of risk-free practices canine is an alert basically canine. Breed or length does not remember, each and all the canine has to do is bark to alert the owner. the owner will take it from there. yet another kind of risk-free practices canine is a picture basically canine. a picture canine is knowledgeable to bark and stand in an aggressive way whilst commanded to realize this. this kind of canine could desire to be large in length to deter somebody. yet yet another kind of risk-free practices canine is one that is knowledgeable to bark and stand in an aggressive way on command, yet then additionally bodily restrain a guy or woman whilst given yet another command. a reliable occasion is a police canine which will take care of it quite is handler by applying moving forward and barking, and then understand the suspect whilst commanded. those canines do no longer make those judgements on their own, they could basically gain this under command. The final kind of risk-free practices canine is a real shelter canine. those canines are knowledgeable to take care of property against any intruder different than their handler, regardless of no remember if it quite is a real burglar or a lost new child. There are makes use of for those canines, yet regularly they're risky and should no longer be owned by applying the regular public. different than alert canines, that are frequently small canines, usually risk-free practices canines are German Shepherds, Dobermans, Belgian Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc. Any large breed could artwork as long as they're large sufficient to resign a guy, yet additionally distinctly trainable. i do no longer advise Pit Bulls are AmStaffs for risk-free practices artwork. no longer because of the fact they can't do it, yet because of the fact the breed already has a stigma that i do no longer decide to make a contribution to. maximum people who see Pits/AmStaffs with risk-free practices education assume they're in simple terms undesirable canines, that's amazingly unhappy.

Pit Bulls, Rotweillers, Chows, Dobermans. But if you own your own home or even rent, it will be difficult to get insurance because they are considered liabilities.
