I have a job working in sales. And it is killing me. I see other coworkers in other offices who (looking from my perspective) seem to have an advantage in sales because of their location. I love the customer service part of my job...helping people, getting them into the right product or service...But I also have quotas. How do I get good leads? How else can I get my name out there besides cold calls? How far will networking REALLY get me? How do I network? Why do I feel like I am busting my hump with little progress? HELP!

Sales is not for everybody. You have to be able to take "No" and not take it personally. Quotas are part of the sales job so your employer can set a plan to achieve the goals for the company/division/product. Without a quota (or a plan) there would be no goals for success or ability to build a strategy and budget for the future.

Now if you are not getting leads, you should talk to your product manager or marketing person. A salesman job should not primarily be generating leads. It should be timely follow up on leads generated by marketing, print, events, early adopters, etc.

You didnt mention the type of product you sell, but what I would do is reach out to your sales manager. Maybe he/she could give you some tips on how to be a better sales person. Maybe your approach is flawed, and all you need is an improved sales strategy. Talk to the BEST salesman in your company. People LOVE to talk about themself. Offer to buy him or her a cup of coffee for some tips and techniques.

Lastly, it is ALL about networking. People will buy from people they like - regardless of the company, the product or the competitors..sometimes even the price. Be yourself, and most of all remember - what will it matter in 10 years? Nothing

Have fun and good luck

Are Sales Jobs Hard

It's really hard in the beginning -- the only thing you CAN do is cold calls and trust to luck. But if you help people, get them what they need when they need it -- you will build up your client base. And they might help you out by word of mouth.

I was a Mary Kay lady for a few months, and I can sympathize completely. Sales is tough. But it's a job that helps people out, if you believe in your product.

Good luck, and keep plugging! Does your job have one of those "how to succeed in sales" manuals? If not, you might want to ask your Mary Kay lady or Avon lady to borrow hers for a week, and see if there are some good tips there.

One thing about sales that is both beautiful and horrifying is that your success will largely depend on what personality changes you are ready and willing to make. I'm personally a Jeffrey Combs fan (www.goldenmastermind.com). I quote him when I say "heart is better than talent." Most of your questions boil down to you believing in yourself and that you deserve to get your goals. If you can be confident and passionate about what you are doing, almost every lead will be a good lead. Your name will spread itself around because of who you are. Cold calls themselves will be a fun game. You'll get to stop worrying about not progressing, and you'll get to choose what areas you get to progress in. But how do you network? I've always thought that was a kind of ambiguous word. If you're passionate about what you do, you'll just do it. You'll tell people what you do, or they'll ask. People will know who you are not because of any special networking skills, but because you are passionate and believe. There has been a lot written about sales techniques and skills. Skills are overrated. It's all about you.
I know I don't know you, that I've never met you, but I want to assure you that I believe in you. You deserve to have all the happiness and success in the world. Don't let anyone past or present cause you to believe otherwise.

Satisifying the customer.. Or closing the sales depending on the type of sales or customer service work you are doing.. I would have to say, there are just some customers that will never be satisfied no matter what is done... Good luck

I think sales is not tough job because if the product is very well marketed in the market then its easy to sell because customers are coming to your location to buy its just matter of convincing their mind to buy the product. I could have give you some brilliant ideas if you would have mention nature of products you are selling. In sales. a sales person should be easy to approach, always greets customer, tell what is good for them because customer is like 7 year old child they are with you unless unlit you are telling something they are interested in your talking so always have very positive kind of conversation with customer. Tell them what is good for them & what not if you get success doing that then customer thinks you are their wellwisher.
