I ask them to please hold while I get the head of the household, then I set the phone aside and go on with life as normal...You can make it more interesting by placing bets on how long the telemarketer will hold on before realizing you are not coming back.

OK im a former telemarketer so im going to give you some great tips

1 Please remeber that the person calling is just doing there job unpleasent behavior rude comments and cursing is not the way to go these people are just trying to earn a paycheck ( i know this was how i had to pay off a very big debt from college)

2 Politely ask if this is a sales/fundraiser/survey/marketing call then state that you are in no way interested and ask them to take your number off there list .

3 Then ask for the persons name/employee number and the name of the company

4 then tell them that if you recieve another call you will report them to the FCC

5 to avoid this all together register for the do not call list
and also try to get an unlisted number
also when you sign up for discount cards /services/ free trips DO NOT GIVE YOUR PHONE # this is how Telemarketer companies get your number and name there is a loop hole in the registrey rules if you have done business prior to the call they can call you telemarketers buy phone lists off other companies always request that your personal info be kept private and is not to be sold also try to only use businesses that promise not to sell your info

this should help a lot good luck

Telephone Marketer

I have registered with the FCC and am on the No Call List. What a wonderful thing! However, this does not stop charities and political calls. I usually tell the charities that I already have my giving planned (I actually do!) and tell political callers I'm not interested. They end the call politely and it's done.

Fed up with unsolicited calls from sales people ?. Try this, it is working for me, so far they have not called back, despite my asking them to !
Answer the call, be friendly, ask their name, ignore anything they try to say.
Tell them how thankful you are that they have called for a chat, as you live alone getting a call is such a treat. Stress how lonely you are since your wife left you (taking your dog with her) and how great it is to have someone to talk to and how lonely and depressed you are on your own. Ramble on along the same lines for as long as you can keep a straight face, talk over any attempt they make to try and get back on the subject or disclose any details. Should they ask if you remember the accident you had (most of my calls are ambulance chasers), just say that your memory is failing etc. As you are obviously old and getting forgetful, start all over again re-telling the same stuff, as you do!
And lastly - ask them to ring you for a chat again soon.
My best is about 7 minutes so far before they give up.
I look forward to unsolicited calls now :)

I worked as a telemarketer for a short while (couldn't do it for too long, lol). The absolute BEST thing you can do for yourself AND the telemarketer is say, "I'm not interested, thank you for calling," and hang up.

That way, you avoided the call and don't have to deal with it. Also, the telemarketer gets what's called a "complete call," and is making progress in their job. They also don't have to be faced with rude people, which is a VERY hard part of the job.

So be polite then hang up, and everybody wins! :)

As in my country there isn't any "do not call list" I just hang up on them and disconnect my telephone for about 20 or 30 minutes.

I remind them that I am on the Do Not Call list and I report violations to the Do Not Call web page. Then I usually hang up.

I would ask them to "hold on a second please" and put the phone down and go do other stuff/chores
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.
