It depends. Medicaid will generally go retroactive coverage for three months. HOWEVER, since you technically have no coverage RIGHT NOW, the dentist doesn't have to wait for payment. You can be responsible for payment.

The only way a Medicaid patient can be responsible for payment in New York state is if they were not covered at the time of service. (If your recert has not taken effect and they check your medicaid eligibility - which they are legally bound to do - and it shows you have no coverage at this time.) But, then the dentist doesn't have to render care without getting some payment from you.

Some will treat you now anyway and worry about trying to get paid later, but you can't count on that. You need to explain to them the situation and they need to decide.

The dentist may offer to give you assistance but they will not be receiving reimbursement from NY Medicaid as you have no coverage on the date of service.
