Days??? How about years....
Depending on how much you drive on a daily basis, and you treat driving with the respect that the "privilege" requires, it will probably take you two years before you quit having to think about every little thing you do while driving. The minute that you think you are better than the vehicle you are driving, it will bite you in the butt and show you that you are wrong. It is only a piece of machinery. It does not have thought processes, but if you think your are "bullet-proof", you inattention to your driving will come full circle and get you.
Please just keep one thing in mind. No matter how long you drive, or how many miles you do in your lifetime, it only takes one moment of inattention to change your life or the life of some innocent bystander.
I have had a drivers license for 39 years. 30 years of that I have driven tractor/trailer rigs all over North America. I have 2.5 million miles under my belt with no accidents or moving violations in a truck, but I still tell myself that if a day goes by that I don't learn something new, it's time to get out from behind the wheel and walk away.... before it kills me or someone else.
I'm not trying to scare you... I just hope you won't be in a hurry to "relax" behind the wheel. The knots in your shoulders will go away as your confidence builds, but don't get lazy in your attentiveness to your driving duties. The outcome can ruin the rest of your life.
Good luck and safe motoring....

It took me months of driving practice until I stopped being nervous.
It took me years until I could go more than a year without an accident, or near miss.
It has now been approx 25 years since my last accident, but I still have near misses several times a year.
Each time after a near miss, I analyse if I had had any carelessness, if the place where I was driving was too hazardous during certain times of day, what could I should I have been doing differently to do better job of avoiding that.
Escaping near misses maybe keeps us on our toes, like a military is better prepared if they recently were involved in the real thing.
What I mean by a near miss:
* I signal to change lanes one way, and a vehicle in next lane over changes lanes in other direction towards me at the same time.
* I am going through an intersection when the light turns orange, and some other traffic jumps the gun on their turn to go.
* The traffic lights are malfunctioning, and some other driver blindly obeys lights that take us all into harms way.
* Driving conditions are pretty hazardous due to freezing rain & the clown behind me is following too closely.
In other words people are driving normally, with disregard for safety & I am having trouble dodging risks.

Days? It took me months. I would hunch up behind the wheel and have this apologetic look when some one would overtake me with this look " How much more slower can you get?"
One good thing about not being too confident is that you do not get into accidents, nor hit anything and anyone. You can also figure out where everyone is, what direction they are heading and what their speeds are at any given time. Then you can avoid, steer out of trouble and learn how to anticipate their possible next move. I need to know where the pedestrians are, are they jaywalking, how fast are they jaywalking, where are the suicidal cyclists ( those are scariest because they are so fast and practically materialize out of nowhere) or the kids chasing a ball between parked cars.
My philosophy is that as long as there is another lane, the "Indy" guys can always overtake me to their hearts content.
Dont rush. Other drivers are very forgiving with the new driver.

Remember that when you start feeling confident about driving, that will be when you have an accident.
